"Why-do I- have- a unicorn horn?!", the pegasus exclaimed quite confusedly. Sadly, she received no answer. She decided that today, she would absolutely not be going out in public that day. (Or any day ever, for as much as she thought.) So, she scribbled out a letter that said,"Dear Everypony, I am sorry, but today I cannot go outside or join in any fun things because I have a really bad cold. I'm Really, Truly Sorry For This Inconvenience, Lightning Dust ". She opened her window, made sure that nopony was staring at her, threw it out the window, and yelled, "Hey, mailpony! Read this to ponies!", and closed the window. The next thing on her agenda was figuring out why she had a unicorn horn.

Useless book was useless. She opened up another book, Analysis of Unicornia, by somepony whose name she couldn't pronounce. It was a spellbook. Also useless. Soon enough, Lightning found out that most of her books were useless. She was left with three books: Grace of the Horn, Sound of Magic, and a book called Magicae Studiis. She opened up Grace of the Horn, which turned out to be a unicorn history book, and Sound of Magic was a fiction book. So, this left Magicae Studiis. Of course, Lightning Dust thought, this must be the magical Book-Guffin I was waiting for! She was wrong. It was all in a different language she couldn't read. "I'll find out myself! THIS must be my MacGuffin!". Gosh, I hope she's right.

At the top was a scroll in a small flower vase. "Dear Princesses, I have a horn and pegasi aren't supposed to have horns but I have one and I don't know why please help. ~Lightning Dust" Celestia was confused. "That's right, pegasi aren't supposed to have unicorn horns." she said, ignoring Lightning's run-on sentence. "Magic book summon!" she semi-quietly yelled, casting a magic-book summoning spell. The magical book crashed into the room at that moment, landing neatly on Celestia's throne-side table (which had cupholders). "Magic book...Open!" said the princess, and the book opened. "Magic book, away." she said, and the book did so. "LUNA!" Celestia yelled, "What is 'Spontaneous Alicorn Phenomenon'?" Luna walked in. "Spontaneous Alicorn Phenomenon," said the dark blue alicorn princess, "Is when a non-alicorn pony randomly turns into an alicorn." "I already knew that, Luna." Celestia said to her sister. "I wanted to know what the lasting effects are." "Oh." replied Luna. "Well, I don't know all of it at the moment, but I think it eventually turns the phenomenonee into a proper alicorn. Oh, yes, now I remember! It grants the phenomenonee full alicorn ability. Sister, why are you frowning like that? Were the cupholders a bad idea?" Celestia looked up from her throne-table and said, "No, the cupholders are really great. It's just that I got a letter from Lightning Dust of Cloudsdale, and I believe she experienced the phenomenon you just explained." "I will contact her at once." said Luna, who made an ink quill, and paper appear by her side. "Great idea." replied Celestia. 'I will look more into this Spontaneous Alicorn Phenomenon." As soon as Luna got into the royal library, she set to work writing a letter to Lightning Dust.

After all, they were the alicorns, and she was (or used to be) just a pegasus. Luna walked into the throne room, finding that Celestia had her nose stuck in her magical book (metaphorically, of course). "Sister," said Luna, "I have sent the letter to Lightning Dust. And how are you doing?" Celestia replied, not looking up from her book, "I can't really say. I'm still looking into the subject." "Well, what have you found so far?" "Well," said Celestia, finally looking up from the book, "I have found out that there is a way to reverse this." Luna's ears perked up. "How so, dear sister?" asked the alicorn mare. "Well, we're going to have to have Lightning Dust's help." said Celestia. "I will write a letter to Miss Dust at once." And so Luna did. The reply to Luna's letter arrived surprisingly quick. "Dear Princesses," it began. "With all due respect, I've decided that I would only cause trouble, so I must decline your request. Very Sorry For the Inconvenience, Lightning Dust ". Luna daintily rushed into the throne room, where Celestia was researching even further into the subject of what had happened to Miss Dust. "Sister." said Luna, with a look that screamed 'bad news', "She declined." "What?!" exclaimed Celestia, in a voice that was still somehow regal and mannerly. "It is true, my sister." said Luna, sadly nodding. "Well, then, get a guard to escort her to the castle." Luna nodded again. "Urgent orders, sister." "I understand. I will notify an escort as soon as I can." And with that, Luna disappeared in a cascade of dark blue sparkles. Celestia sighed. "That Lightning Dust pony is very stubborn. I suppose I should get back to my research." And so, Celestia continued research as Luna ordered two guards to escort Lightning Dust to the castle.

Lightning Dust opened it, hoping it wasn't about that wagon she had crashed a while back. "Dear Lightning Dust,", the letter began. "My sister and I received your letter about your unicorn horn, and we believe we have the answer. At least, the answer as to what happened to you. We believe you were-and still are- a phenomenonee of a phenomenon called 'Spontaneous Alicorn Phenomenon'. As I am writing this letter, my sister is looking more into this phenomenon in order to find a possible cure. And, as a side note and a precaution, I must warn you. Eventually, this phenomenon will cause you to become similar to-in perspective- a true-born alicorn. This will mean you will gain magical spell-casting abilities, but be warned: this power is dangerous, and without proper magical studies and knowledge, can lead to disaster. Urgent warnings, Princess Luna." "Wow," said Lightning Dust, "She really likes to use the word 'phenomenon' a lot." Lightning paused, taking in what she just read. "So that means I'll be as strong as Princess Twilight? Or even the sisters?" she wondered out loud. "But Luna did say it would be dangerous." Lightning Dust paused again, finally beginning to really understand the predicament she was in.

And thus begins the tale of how Lightning Dust became an alicorn. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Lightning Dust woke up with a halfhearted yawn. She felt okay(ish), but somehow slightly....off. She decided to make herself a bagel (how she would, I don't know), so she went downstairs. In a few minutes, the bagel was ready. It was a good bagel. And now that her breakfast bagel was eaten, she decided to brush her mane and put on a few accessories, because reasons. So she stumbled back up the stairs, staggered into the bathroom and got the brush, which was levitating via a small orange light. It didn't alarm Lightning, because it was early in the morning, and she was half asleep. But what did phase her was the fact that, when she looked in the mirror, a unicorn horn was on hear forehead. "Oh, so that's where that light came from.", said Lightning, having not yet fully processed the situation.

Lightning Dust put on a medium-sized, light orange hat. (It was all she could find.) [She didn't really look.] She stepped outside. She waved to other ponies, trying to keep her hat on, and not look suspicious as well, which was hard, considering the fact that the hat she was wearing was several years old. Lightning Dust burst into the library, and meandered over to the librarian (it was a library, after all.) "Why hello, dear." said the librarian, adjusting her reading glasses. "What do you need help with today?" she asked, taking a slight glance at Lightning Dust's hat. "Oh, nothing. Just a book on unicorns." "And what is this book named?" asked the librarian. "I dunno," replied Lightning, impatiently. "I just want to find a book about unicorns." "Can do, dear. We have lotsof books about unicorns. Our most recent one is called Wings to the Sky, and it's by Twilight Sparkle herself." proclaimed the librarian, as if she was bragging about owning a book. What an egghead, thought Lightning, but she told the librarian she wanted Wings to the Sky, and a few other books about unicorns. "Have a nice day, dear." the librarian said, but Lightning Dust was already gone.

"Their Majesties Princess Luna and Princess Celestia requested that we escort Miss Lightning Dust to the Royal Canterlot Castle at once." "Sure." said Lightning Dust, almost leaping outside, making sure her hat didn't fall off. The two guards were hooked up to a small plain-looking chariot. "This way, madam." said the first guard. "We're off for Canterlot...Now." said the second, as they took off. The ride was short, but quite scenic and splendid. Lightning Dust gazed upon the ponyfolk of Ponyville. Then, the guards landed. "We have landed at the front gates of the Royal Castle." proclaimed the first guard in accordance. The second one added, "Head straight through the main doors, and take the first left you see, and you will arrive at the Throne Room of Their Majesties Princess Luna and Princess Celestia." "Thanks." said Lightning. And so, she did take the first left, and arrived in the throne room of the princesses. Lightning Dust found that Celestia was reading a rather important-looking book. "Hello, Princess Celestia." said Lightning. "Ah, hello, Miss Dust." said the princess cheerfully, looking up from her book. "Please, call me Lightning Dust, ma'am." Lighting Dust told Celestia, because she despised the princess's little nickname for her. "Luna!" Celestia called. "What, dear sister?" asked Luna. "Hello, Princess Luna." Lightning said with a wave. "Ah, Lightning Dust, I am so glad to see you." "So, why was I brought here?" Lightning asked. "Well." began Luna, "What I didn't tell you- in my letter requesting your travel here- "Is that we need your help to solve this alicorn conundrum." said Celestia, abruptly cutting Luna off. "Sure, so where do we start? Do I need to, like get a dragon's scale or something? An albino bluebird's feather?" "We are still working on that part, to tell the truth." said Luna, beginning to get her stolen thunder back. "Actually, as of now, my sister is researching this subject? May I ask how it is going, sister?" "It is going wonderful, Luna." said Celestia. "I find this subject quite interesting." "How wonderful. Celestia, any new leads?" "Yes. I found out that the source of this phenomenon is ensued only by casting a spell." "A spell?" asked Lightning Dust. "Sounds like there's some begrudgery afoot." said Celestia. "Lightning Dust, you are dismissed. I will send letters to you daily." said Luna. "Sounds like a plan." replied Lightning.
