She looked up at Applejack and forced a smile. “...Yeah, I’ll do that…” she said with effort, grateful for her friend’s concern. Applejack chuckled softly, seeing Twilight's struggle with the taste. "Ah know, it ain't the most pleasant medicine, but it'll do ya a world a' good," she said, her concern for her friend apparent. "Get some rest, and I'll stop by tomorrow to check on ya, make sure yer feeling better." With that said, Applejack began to gather her things, preparing to leave Twilight's home. As she did, she said, "And don't go forgetting to take more of that tonic before bed either. You need sleep, honey." Applejack gave Twilight a playful wink before leaving through the door, leaving Twilight alone with her thoughts. The room was now filled with a strange silence, broken only by the occasional sound of a small nocturnal animal outside. 01:00 PM The clock struck one in the afternoon. Twilight sat in the chair with a pile of books scattered around her, but she wasn’t really reading them. Her mind was still immersed in confusing and recurring thoughts. With a casual yawn, the medicine was starting to take effect. “What’s happening to me?” she wondered as she covered her face with a book, a slight blush on her cheeks. “Maybe it’s a fever from lack of sleep… ugh…” she sighed resignedly. Suddenly, she heard the sound of claws scraping against a surface. Looking up, she noticed Owlowiscious outside the window, trying to get in. With a flash of magic, Twilight’s horn opened the window and the owl extended its wings to enter, perching near her. “What do you have there?” Twilight asked, noticing a rolled-up paper on the animal’s leg. She took the paper and read it. Seeing the first few words, she was surprised. It was a letter from Spike. Finally, after days with no news, she received a message from the little dragon. She couldn’t help but feel like a concerned mother for her child. The letter was brief but full of positive energy. Spike mentioned he was having fun in the Crystal Empire and, in a small section at the end, asked if Twilight was okay. Though she didn’t want to talk about it, the last time she was in the Crystal Empire, what happened with King Sombra still troubled her. She couldn’t stop thinking about that being at first, how it had infiltrated her mind so easily. The fear she felt initially, and the nightmares that followed, kept her in a state of constant unease. “There’s no use thinking about it now…” she said, turning with determination. “Alright, it’s time to sleep.” With renewed resolve, she prepared to try sleeping once more. It was the same as always: floating in space, descending onto a dark floor, and searching for the being from whom she sought answers. This time, he was already there, as if waiting for her. They were face to face, and the distance between them had notably decreased. The creature didn’t take long to move closer, emitting a low, almost playful growl that surprised Twilight. I’m so tired, yes, that must be it,” she murmured to herself. That night, Twilight tossed and turned in bed, her thoughts racing as she tried to understand her new feelings. She had tried to rationalize it, telling herself it was just the result of exhaustion, but deep down she knew it was more than that. “This is ridiculous,” she murmured aloud, burying her face in the pillow. “It’s just... a nightmare, after all. No, I don’t even know what it is…” Twilight continued tossing in bed, trying to clear her confused thoughts and emotions. However, every time she closed her eyes, the vivid images came back to torment her. Her sleep schedule was completely disrupted; she slept during the day and encountered the beast in her dreams, waking up at midnight because she couldn’t go back to sleep due to the frustration it caused her. “Could it be that...?” she murmured, a noticeable blush appearing on her face. Twilight approached stealthily to avoid being noticed, taking advantage of the sound dissipating in the void. “But look at you. You’re not so intimidating now,” she said, getting close enough to notice its breathing. Who would have thought even monsters needed to sleep? She didn’t want to wake him. She simply sat next to him, listening to his snores. Twilight couldn’t help but wonder what had led this dangerous entity to sleep in such a vulnerable position. Was it really asleep or just pretending? If it was asleep, why had it revealed its back, leaving himself exposed to any attack? “I could even hug him, and he wouldn’t know... What is happening...? Where am I?” Twilight murmured, confused and unable to understand what was going on. Was she in a dream, or was it a dream within a dream? The sensation was so real that she began to question reality. She looked at the figure speaking to her and, recognizing it, frowned and gritted her teeth. “King Sombra...” she said firmly. “Ah, finally awake, little pony,” King Sombra replied with a malevolent smile. The malevolent unicorn approached her, the chains imprisoning her clinking ominously. “Believe me, I’ve been waiting for you for a long time,” the evil unicorn continued, positioning himself in front of her. “And finally, you are my captive.” “What...? You’re crazy!” Twilight exclaimed as the chains bound her, feeling a strange discomfort. The sensation was completely opposite to the comfort she had felt with the beast. Yet, something felt familiar. “Oh, how your confidence in the future amuses me, but let’s be honest, little pony,” Sombra responded with a cold laugh. “Here you are, alone. Without your friends. Without escape.” Sombra moved closer to her, his dark gaze focused on his trapped prey. “I can see the desperation in your eyes, desperation and a certain fear. You know you can’t escape. You know you now belong to me.” Sombra extended his hoof to stroke Twilight’s cheek, his touch cold and dominant in sharp contrast to the warm feeling of that strange touch. “I want to wake up,” Twilight thought, wishing to escape this nightmare. “I want to wake up,” "Gasp...!" She was breathless, unable to breathe. She got up with difficulty, staggering, feeling the pressure in her chest again. A faint growl startled her. She had forgotten; the creature was staring at her, as if it had just woken up. Seeing Twilight hyperventilate, he quickly got up and approached her. “Stop! She could handle having weird dreams about mysterious demons, but why did it have to be that tyrant? She was doing everything she could to forget the drama of saving the Crystal Empire! Now she had to figure out if King Sombra had some secret link to this mysterious beast. Twilight plopped down on her bed, determined that no one—certainly not her dreams—was going to mess with her. She needed a nap to recover from all this absurdity! She opened her eyes expecting to find that beast. But instead of the usual void, she found herself sitting on a hill. The confusion was evident; it was nighttime, and she could feel the night breeze moving her hair, just as always. Everything felt so real. From the hill, she could see all of Ponyville. “This is different…” she murmured, looking around for someone. A rustle from some trees made her turn abruptly, surprised. “Is it… you?” she asked nervously, hoping it was the shadowy creature. But the voice that responded was not what she expected. “Were you waiting for me, little one?” said a familiar voice, the dark, malevolent unicorn approaching from the trees with a smile that could scare even the bravest. “Not again! Why do I keep dreaming about you?” Twilight declared harshly, her voice betraying a mix of anger and fear. “There’s no need to be so angry, Twilight. I’m just visiting; isn’t that enough?” Sombra said with a mocking smile. “Besides, it’s not like I need a reason to be here. I go where I want, when I want.” “A visit? A visit to what, exactly?” Twilight asked, glancing at a nearby tree. These dreams were becoming ridiculous, each worse than the last. “You know, maybe something brought me here… Maybe I just felt like coming,” Sombra said, his tone becoming flirtatious as he stroked Twilight’s cheek with his hoof. “Maybe I missed you,” he added seductively. “Don’t touch me!” Twilight exclaimed, narrowing her eyes and taking another step towards Sombra. “Now, what are you talking about? I want to wake up already!” she huffed, her ears twitching slightly with growing irritation. Sombra only laughed maliciously and seemed to ignore everything she said. “You must be new to this place, Twilight. Many things seem to happen by chance,” Sombra laughed as he slowly approached her. At what point did she fall asleep? She sighed, unable to remember how many times this had happened. Why did she keep having these bizarre dreams within dreams? She knew what was coming. Was this his punishment, trapped in the same darkness that once was his power? “It’s not so bad,” he thought. He lay down and began to sleep. “It was all her fault.” King Sombra jolted awake. What was that voice? Was that his own voice? But he hadn’t spoken. “That unicorn and her stupid dragon.” He got up again. Who was interrupting his eternal nap? Couldn’t he even rest in his own hell? This was too much. “They ruined all our plans… My plans!” He looked in every direction but couldn’t discern where the voices were coming from. Everything was too dark. Finally, he saw it: many versions of himself, talking amongst each other. “And now what? Our physical form is falling apart.” “It’s because of the heart. We barely managed.” “W-W-We’re going to die? I don’t want to die!” “Who invited the weird one?” King Sombra watched with curiosity. There were many versions of himself, all speaking almost simultaneously, making it hard to understand them. What was happening? He approached them. Were they the reason he couldn’t feel anything? It seemed that not only had his physical body shattered into deformity, but his soul had too. All the versions noticed his presence. “Who is that?” asked one. “He is us,” replied another. “Us? I’m not that ugly. You compare me to that thing?” said another. “M-M-Monster!” one of them exclaimed. King Sombra watched with curiosity, trying to speak to them, but his voice wouldn’t come out. It seemed his physical form had become so deformed that his voice was no longer compatible with his body. He tried several more times, but to no avail. He didn't think much of it; after all, he no longer felt anything. Instead, he continued to observe the others. “So what are we supposed to do now? We don’t have much time left.” “How bad is the situation?” “Bad. Devastating. At this rate, it won’t be long before our soul fades along with this body. Curse that crystal heart.” “W-We’re going to die! I don’t want to die alone!” King Sombra flinched. Was he going to die? Perhaps now he could feel the desperation to live? No, he felt nothing. How thrilling. But he thought maybe it was for the best; he had achieved nothing in his life, and a bunch of ponies had defeated him. Could he even live with such shame? They even bypassed the power of an alicorn. He was good, he wouldn’t deny it, but he wasn’t that powerful, especially not at that moment. "And they started tormenting me. How nice," said Twilight, turning around to look at him with a hint of sarcasm. "You really don’t know how to lose." Sombra looked at her, somewhat amused. It was the first time they’d had a conversation that wasn’t one-sided, where one spoke and the other responded with grunts. He started to laugh, but suddenly, he felt something was wrong. "Ugh…" he stopped abruptly. Twilight noticed and rushed to him. “What’s happening to you?” she asked, panic rising in her voice, but what happened next, she hadn’t expected at all. He was fading away—or rather, his body was disappearing, like a mere reflection. Twilight reached out with a trembling hoof towards him. What was happening? Fortunately, he was still somewhat solid; she could touch him, but he was slowly vanishing. They looked at each other, one more worried than the other. "We need to hurry," Twilight said. She was right; there wasn’t much time left. Sombra was stunned. This was bad—very bad. But he wasn’t thinking about himself. He thought that if he disappeared first, Twilight would be next. If he vanished, this entire surreal reality would vanish along with Twilight's consciousness. This was very bad. "Twilight, you have to go. Please," Sombra said urgently. "Sombra, I already told you, we’re going to—" she began, but he interrupted her. "Twilight, just look at me! It’s fine. This is what I deserve, don’t you think?" he repeated, desperate for her to leave. "If something happens to you, I..." Twilight was startled. It was obvious that she mattered to him. Despite the things they had said before, were these emotions the same ones she felt for him when he was in his monstrous form? And if it was the same, that would make everything much more complicated given the moment they were in. "Sombra, it’s okay, you haven’t done anything to me—" she tried to say, but once again, she was interrupted. Frustrating, yes. Why wouldn't they let her finish? "Twilight..." he murmured with difficulty. He couldn't face her, and he couldn't because his conscience wouldn't let him. "You... you don't know, you have no idea what they did to you, or rather, what I did to you in those dreams..." he said, unsure of how to continue. "You have no idea! You're lucky you can't remember them... but I..." Twilight looked at him with that expression again, that pained look that made his heart clench like a thorn piercing it. He was right; she couldn't remember the dreams from before she first saw him in his monstrous form. "Yes, you're right," Twilight admitted, making Sombra lower his gaze even more. Even though he needed to confront her, he couldn't. "But it wasn't you; it was them," the pony added. "But I am them... and besides, I could have prevented it... but I chose not to." His voice trembled slightly as he finally looked up at her. "Why are you doing this? I mean, I don't deserve anything from you." "Sombra..." Twilight murmured. It was the first time she saw him like this. The first time she faced him, not in her dreams but when she defeated him, she thought he was evil, selfish, and many other things she decided not to mention. But now, she could see many things, including that he also felt fear, just like her. “It would be better this way, Twilight, to disappear like the shadow of a dream,” said Sombra, turning his gaze away completely. He wouldn’t let her perish with him; he was decided, determined! He would do anything to get her out of this dream. “What are you talking about? I already told you, we’ll find a way!” Twilight exclaimed with frustration. She knew she would find a solution, but at the rate Sombra was fading, every second counted. “Let’s keep moving,” she added, turning around and continuing. She wouldn’t take no for an answer, but he didn’t move. “No,” Sombra replied, not taking a step. Twilight started walking, but didn’t turn around. “Where are we supposed to go...? This place is doomed!” he shouted, gesturing all around. “Why bother saving me? Twilight, you have to get out of here, now!” Twilight stopped, her gaze down, teeth clenched. Let him die? No one would do that, least of all her. Why? Well, her emotions had been intense ever since she started dreaming about him. Maybe she had developed some kind of attachment? But that didn’t matter now. Whether it was attachment or even love, it didn’t matter. She could figure it out later, but not while Sombra was disappearing. She turned to him and just stared. Sombra flinched. A staring contest? He was very good at those, and he wouldn’t go down easily! Both of them locked eyes as if arguing silently. Twilight stood there, persistent, immovable, but Sombra’s pupils were beginning to waver. He blinked. Damn. “All right, tell me the plan,” Sombra said, sighing in resignation. Twilight gave a small smile of victory. Sombra also smiled, seeing her childlike attitude as she took charge. Had the real leader just shown up? “Okay, I’ve been thinking about something,” continued the pony. “Since when? Since you got here?” Sombra asked, confused but amused. “Something like that. I still need to confirm a few things, but yes. It might work,” said the bright unicorn. This definitely had to work. It had to. “I still insist you should leave; there’s still time,” said Sombra. He wouldn’t stop insisting. This was no longer just about him; it was about her. She, who made him feel things. Even now. “Stop it. Anyway, I can’t wake up,” she said as if it were nothing. “Excuse me? What do you mean by that?” Sombra asked, confused. It was true, he no longer had the ability to wake her up. Now that he thought about it, he had tried to wake her up when he told her to leave, but she hadn’t disappeared. Why? “I’m inside your dreams, in my dream. It’s... strange,” she replied, somewhat confused by the situation. “That makes no sense,” he said, laughing. “None of this does. How did even your other versions manage to connect to my dreams?” Twilight responded. Sombra looked at her thoughtfully. It had been surprisingly straightforward—just explaining that their existence depended on this method. The fragments had set aside their arrogance and quickly accepted. Sombra, on his part, felt revitalized, his energy and strength renewed. Yet, despite these improvements, he continued to fade, like a shadow slipping just out of reach. "I don’t understand… Why do you keep fading away?" Twilight murmured, her mind racing as she fixed her intense gaze on Sombra. Was she missing something? Even after absorbing several fragments, he still seemed to waver, like a mirage on the edge of vanishing entirely. Sombra noticed the look of deep concern on Twilight’s face and, almost instinctively, offered her a faint, reassuring smile. It was a gesture that seemed to emerge from the depths of his own weariness. Despite his fading strength and the unsettling reality of his condition, there was a strange comfort in seeing someone care so intensely for him. "Maybe it’s because... not all the fragments are here yet," he suggested, his voice carrying the conviction that more fragments were still out there, waiting to be found. "The worst part is that everyone says the same thing when I ask how they connected to my dreams…" Twilight muttered, her voice carrying an edge of frustration as if the words had escaped her lips almost involuntarily. It just sort of came to him out of nowhere. None of the rest of us had even thought of it. I don’t even know how he managed to make it work." "But, literally, we’re the same," Sombra interjected, staring intently at the fragment. "Yeah, but our memories are fragmented too. It’s a bad joke," the fragment grumbled with irritation. "Anyway, I accept. Anything to avoid disappearing here." With those final words, the fragment underwent a profound transformation. It began to shimmer and pulsate with a soft, radiant glow, its form condensing into a luminous orb of light. The orb’s light grew more intense and pure, as if gathering all the essence and energy of the fragment into a singular, concentrated point. Slowly, the orb floated toward Sombra, its glow mingling with the darkness that surrounded him. As the light touched Sombra, it enveloped him in a gentle, warm embrace, seamlessly merging with his own form. Twilight looked away, her frustration mounting. None of this made sense. If she didn’t even understand how they had connected in the first place, how could she resolve it? Sombra continued to fade. What if she was wrong? What if restoring his soul wasn’t enough and he kept disappearing despite all their efforts? The fear gripped her tightly, cold and paralyzing. "Twilight, calm down…" Sombra whispered softly. He wanted to insist once more that she leave him, let him stay behind, but he knew this wasn’t the right time. Not after she had fought so hard for him up to this point. "There has to be a way," he said, trying to sound hopeful. "Yes… there has to be a way…" she responded, her voice barely audible, tinged with a mix of hope and uncertainty. They exchanged a look, and Sombra’s gaze was unexpectedly reassuring. That moment seemed to stretch on indefinitely, but they both knew there was no time to waste. "Let’s find the last one…" Twilight said, determination in her eyes. She knew exactly who it was. In every dream, she had encountered a different version of Sombra, but one was missing: the one who had kissed her the first time. They walked on, the surroundings growing progressively darker, as if shadows were seeping from every corner. Finally, they spotted it: a corner even darker than the rest, where a fragment rested, almost as if it were lounging comfortably. It didn’t seem to be in a state of panic like the other versions they had encountered. Twilight approached with caution. "Twilight… wait, let me handle this one…" Sombra said, stopping her with a gentle but firm hoof. He sensed that something had happened between this fragment and Twilight. Was it jealousy he was feeling? Or perhaps it was just insecurity, a fear of something happening to her? Twilight paused, surprised by Sombra’s tone. She knew this encounter might be different from the others, but how bad could it be? Still, Sombra continued to fade, as if all their previous efforts had been for nothing. "No… it’s fine. Twilight moved slowly toward the dark corner that seemed to throb with a life of its own. The fragment hadn’t noticed her presence yet, but she could feel what was about to happen: as soon as she crossed that boundary, every possible escape route would be sealed behind her. "What…?!" Will you join him, or will I have to make you?” Twilight said firmly, her eyes narrowing. “Oh…” he responded, feigning fear. “I didn’t know you could be so aggressive. I wish I’d known that sooner…” he added in a sinister voice that sent a shiver down Twilight’s spine. Why did that tone sound so familiar? “Oh, little one. You remember. Your body seems to remember,” he continued, stepping closer to her. “Don’t you recall all those ‘lovely’ moments we shared in your dreams?” he taunted, waiting for a reaction that would satisfy him. “I do. Every scream, every struggle…” “Enough.” Twilight cut him off, not wanting to hear more. But her body trembled slightly at his proximity. She didn’t want to imagine what he had done to torment her back then. “What a killjoy,” he said, sounding bored as he stepped back again. “Where’s that me who couldn’t speak? Oh, right, now he can. Why do mares always go crazy for the goody-two-shoes? I’ll never understand.” Twilight, tired of his games, stepped forward with determination. “Listen, time is running out,” she said. “How original,” King Sombra retorted. “Thanks for the update; you can leave now.” Twilight felt a twitch in her eye; this fragment was undoubtedly the hardest to deal with. Then she remembered what all the other fragments had said. “You… you were behind all of this?” Twilight murmured. Sombra turned at her words. “Well, well… you caught me! What are you going to do now, officer?” he replied sarcastically, raising his hooves. “Or maybe you’re curious about how I did it? It wasn’t that complicated, to be honest,” the fragment continued. Twilight couldn’t deny her curiosity. She feared the method was so obvious, so simple, that it worked precisely because of that. “You’ve probably figured it out by now, but this isn’t a ‘dream,’” he said, leaving Twilight even more confused. “Well, actually, it is, because you’re in our head right now. But I mean out there, in that dark place,” he added, emphasizing his point. Twilight was somewhat aware of that. Somehow, they managed to connect their consciousness in this kind of sub-reality where Sombra’s body, twisted by darkness, could exist. She thought it was because of the Crystal Heart. “You know, I read a book once, a long time ago. A rather boring book. But it said some very interesting things that I didn’t quite understand back then…” the fragment mused, as if recalling something distant. “It said something like… ‘Normally, when we dream, we have this "dream body"; it’s not a real body, but one we create to project ourselves in our dreams. The dream body usually represents our consciousness, and this can be easily drawn by certain energies... or something like that.’ How’s that for clever?” Twilight’s eyes widened. “What did you say? That book… I read it a few days ago, but half the paragraph was torn out…” she murmured. This fragment knew the rest of the sentence. What did he mean by consciousness being easily drawn by energies? The fragment ignored her reaction. “Well, that’s that. I thought if we used our hatred for you to create a bond and anchor your consciousness to this crumbling sub-reality while you were sleeping. Because when you sleep, that's when you're most vulnerable… I told you, very boring stuff, but it worked somehow,” King Sombra concluded. “So, you were never really in my dreams... Instead, you connected my consciousness to that sub-reality... but...” Twilight continued, still piecing it all together. “Ah, you’ve finally grasped it, Twilight," Sombra replied with that typical villainous air, enjoying the moment of explaining his scheme to the hero. "Since it wasn’t a dream to begin with, that’s why Princess Luna had no full access to it. From her perspective, she could only see what was on the outside—a dark, gloomy, empty place…” “But what about the dreams within other dreams?” Twilight asked, still not fully understanding that part. “Oh, by that time, your consciousness was already trapped in this sub-reality. No one else could enter to stop us, except for that beast. So, we had to project ourselves into those dreams somehow. That creature wasn't the only one with certain fragments of its powers, so we were also able to change our surroundings using your magic as the power core.” Sombra replied, stepping a little closer. “By channeling our energies, we could prolong the stay of your consciousness here, making each encounter feel more real than the last,” he added with a sinister smile. He leaned in, closing the distance until he was just inches from her face. “And in that way, trap you here… so you could die with me,” he whispered darkly. Twilight shuddered, a chill running down her spine, but she tried to stand firm in front of him. Their conversation was interrupted when they both looked up at the same time. More dark fragments were falling from the sky, as if signaling there was no time to lose. Twilight turned back to him. “That doesn’t matter anymore. You need to rejoin him to restore the original soul,” Twilight exclaimed, almost as if she were giving a command. “No,” he responded, utterly disinterested. “What?!” she shouted, raising her voice. There was no time for this, damn it. “Why? Don’t you want to live?” “Live as a monster? Hmm, let me think... No. Restoring our soul won’t restore our physical body, will it?” he said, staring at her intently, studying her closely. “Well… there’s that! But, you’d still be alive, wouldn’t you?!” Twilight replied, frustrated. She didn’t understand. The other fragment had accepted easily. Why was this one so stubborn? “You call that living? Being trapped in a dark sub-reality, like a prison, where only you can enter… Doesn’t sound like a gift, does it?” he said, still reluctant but never losing that smile. Twilight’s ears perked up in surprise. What? She hadn’t considered what that would mean. It was true; Sombra couldn’t leave, and she was the only one who could enter because of the connection her consciousness had already established with that place. But wasn’t that a good thing? She didn’t see anything wrong with it, but… would it deprive him of his freedom? Twilight took a deep breath, trying to steady herself. “I didn’t realize…” she said, struggling to keep her voice steady. “I thought… I thought restoring you meant just putting everything back together. But if it means condemning you to this endless limbo… that’s not what I intended.. that’s not…” “Looks like you’re starting to get it,” he said, laughing. “Now you understand that you’re just like me.” “I’m not like you!” she exclaimed. “Oh, really? I wanted to trap you here with me, to perish alongside me. And you, who want to keep me from dying, so I could live as a prisoner, along with you?” he said, emphasizing his point. “That… that’s not true! Stop talking nonsense!” Twilight exclaimed once more. Were they really nonsense, or was there an uncomfortable truth beginning to surface? “Anyway, you’ll be better, you’ll be fine once everyone is reunited and restored. Then we can discuss this.” Sombra was momentarily taken aback by her words before he burst into laughter. Twilight stared at him, shocked. “What now?!” she shouted. “Oh, you’re so amusing…” he said, trying to catch his breath after laughing so hard. “Do you really think he’ll be the same once I merge with him?” said the Sombra fragment with a sarcastic smile. “I didn’t know you were so naive, Twilight.” Twilight shuddered, her brow furrowing as she gritted her teeth. “What do you mean by that?” she demanded, trying to sound firm. “Oh, don’t be like that,” he replied, chuckling as he stepped closer to her. “Maybe he’s part of the main body, but I will always be the dominant personality,” he added with a grin that made Twilight’s eyes go wide. It was true. This fragment was the one most like the King Sombra of the past. If the two of them fused, would all the goodness in his personality be overshadowed by this darkness? It wasn’t certain, but the seed of doubt had already been planted. “But what do I see here?” the fragment said, noticing Twilight’s expression. “Don’t tell me… you’re having second thoughts?” he asked, amazed, as if he couldn’t believe it. “I don’t think… He’ll need all of his parts,” Twilight replied, a bright pink glow forming at the tip of her horn. The fragment stepped back slightly. “What do you think you’re doing? He won’t stop disappearing if I’m missing,” he said, regaining his stance in front of the unicorn. “Or would you risk it all just to have him that way? Like a dog that only follows your orders? A mere monster that can’t speak and only hears your voice?” Twilight also took a step back. The magic in her horn began to dissipate. What was she doing? She didn’t know what would happen if King Sombra was missing one of his fragments. She put a hoof to her head, feeling confused. But she also didn’t want his attitude towards her to change… They were in a tight spot, caught between a rock and a hard place, and time was running out. What would she do now? to be continued

She couldn’t waste any more time on his provocations. "You know, I'm almost tempted to accept your offer just to see how much more you can suffer this way," he continued, amused, his crazed smile reflecting a dark pleasure. "Stop laughing and listen to me!" Twilight shouted, desperately trying to get his attention. "This isn’t a game. I need you to merge with him and stabilize your soul, or we’ll both disappear forever." The Fragment circled around her like a predator stalking its prey, completely indifferent to her words. "Blah, blah, blah. Always the same thing. What is it with you and that guy? What do you like so much about him?" he mocked, a malicious grin on his face. Twilight gritted her teeth, her patience evaporating with each biting comment. "This isn’t about him!" she shot back, feeling the anger burn in her chest. "I'm just trying to save him. That’s all." The Fragment let out an incredulous laugh. "Oh, really? You’re not very good at lying, Sparkle. But... how about we make this a little more interesting? After all, time is running out," he said, stepping toward her dangerously. Twilight instinctively stepped back. The Fragment’s proximity filled her with a sense of imminent danger. She could defend herself, but the fear of harming him—and thereby risking the restoration of his soul—paralyzed her. "What are you planning?" she asked tensely, her eyes following his movements, trying to discern his true intentions. The Fragment smirked, his eyes gleaming with malice as he continued to advance. "I just want to enjoy my last moments... so stay still." Twilight's back hit an invisible wall of darkness, and her breath quickened. She was trapped. There was no escape, and the Fragment kept closing the distance. "Let me go!" she screamed, pushing him, but he only laughed and moved even closer. Just when everything seemed lost, a blast of dark energy cut through the tension. Sombra, the real one, emerged from the shadows, opening a portal in the gloom. He placed himself between her and the Fragment, his gaze sharp as a blade. "Sombra!" Twilight exclaimed in relief, her heart lifting at his timely arrival. "Thank Celestia you made it." "Step away from her," Sombra commanded, his voice steely, glaring at the Fragment with barely contained rage. His face darkened, rage and shame battling for control. He clenched his hooves so tightly his knuckles turned white. "Shut up," he growled, his eyes blazing with fury. "I'm not like you." The Fragment laughed even louder, his laughter echoing through the darkness. "You’re right... The one who stands by and does nothing is just as guilty as the one who causes the harm." The hit landed perfectly, piercing deep into Sombra’s soul. He fell silent, tormented by the words that reflected his deepest fears. He looked at Twilight, guilt etched across his face. "Don’t listen to him," Twilight urged, trying to keep him from falling into the trap. "But... he’s right," Sombra murmured, his voice barely a whisper. "I didn’t do anything to stop the damage in the past... I..." The Fragment reveled in his counterpart’s pain, savoring every second of his suffering. "I was considering reuniting with you again..." the Fragment sneered, his smile twisting further. "Just to make you suffer more. And you know what? I would enjoy it so much." He leaned closer to Sombra’s ear, his voice dripping with venom. "And once we’re together again... as a beast, you can’t even imagine the things I’ll do to her." Sombra trembled with a mix of rage and fear. "Don’t you dare..." "And who’s going to stop me? You? Her? Don’t make me laugh. Fine, I’ll accept. Let’s merge," the Fragment said, preparing for the final moment. He began to glow, an ominous dark light surrounding him. Twilight’s eyes widened, realizing the critical moment had arrived. The Fragment, being only a shattered part of Sombra’s soul, couldn’t resist. "What have you done?!" Twilight gasped, horrified at what she had just witnessed. Sombra turned to her, his voice faint from exhaustion and pain. "I’m sorry, Twilight..." In that moment, he felt all his strength leave him, collapsing to the ground, utterly drained. His body shook slightly after destroying the Fragment, the relief on his face evident, but he also looked exhausted from the monumental effort. "There was no other choice," he rasped, his voice barely above a whisper. "I couldn’t let him merge with me again. I couldn’t let him hurt anyone, especially you." Twilight fought to control her emotions, but the weight of the situation overwhelmed her. Tears filled her eyes as she looked down at the real Sombra, lying on the ground, fragile and pale—just a shadow of what he once was. "Why did you do it, huh?" she spat, her voice trembling with tears. "You didn’t have to put yourself in danger for me!" Sombra tried to sit up but barely managed. His body, weak and drained, struggled to stay awake. Guilt and regret were written all over his face as he saw Twilight’s obvious suffering. "It was... necessary," he responded weakly, his voice barely audible. "I couldn’t just let you suffer." Twilight noticed how the real Sombra was becoming more transparent, his form fading little by little. Desperation swelled in her chest, her heart racing. "No, no, no..." she muttered, struggling to stay calm, though her voice shook with fear. "Sombra, don’t you dare disappear!" Sombra tried to reach out to her, but he barely had the strength to move. His body grew more insubstantial with every passing second, his vision blurring. "Everything... will be... fine..." he said weakly, though his words lacked conviction. Twilight was desperate, watching Sombra fade before her eyes. The words "no, no, no" escaped her lips repeatedly, a desperate attempt to deny reality. "This can’t be happening!" she cried between sobs, her voice full of regret and anguish. Sombra struggled to remain conscious, his words coming in broken, faint breaths. "Forgive me... for all that I’ve... done... and for all that I haven’t..." he murmured, his eyes reflecting deep remorse for his past mistakes. Twilight, with tear-filled eyes and her body trembling slightly, looked at him with a mix of anger and despair. "I don’t forgive you! You’re not going to leave that easily! Don’t disappear here!" she shouted, her voice filled with fury and sadness. "You’re not so cowardly as to leave me alone!" Sombra gathered the last remnants of his strength to speak again. "The place is collapsing, and there’s not much time," he whispered weakly. "I still have some energy left from the fragments... enough to wake you up..." She gracefully turned around, her eyes sparkling with a mix of surprise and warmth. "Ah, I didn’t realize you were there," Zecora said, smiling. She gestured with a hoof to a small table in the center of the room, adorned with a colorful cloth and two cups. "Please, have a seat. I’ll get you something." She carefully placed two cups of steaming green liquid on the table. The aroma of the brew was sweet with a hint of spice, a characteristic scent of the infusions she often made. Zecora sat at the other end of the table, her expression friendly yet inquisitive. "Are you enjoying how things are unfolding? The story must be quite intriguing, hmm?" she asked with a playful smile. Then, her expression shifted to one of mild confusion. "Curious about why I didn’t tell Twilight about the dreams?" She chuckled softly as she took a sip of her tea, savoring the flavor before continuing. "Well, I’ll tell you. But to understand, I must first share a tale." Gently placing her cup on the table, her eyes gleamed with a mysterious light as she began to recount a story that surely held deeper layers to be uncovered by the end. In ancient times, when Equestria was in the bloom of its beginnings, there was a prince, a pony, who lost his beloved suddenly. In his desperation, he sought something beyond our understanding. In the darkest, forgotten corner of time, the prince summoned forces that transcended common knowledge. With a broken heart and immense desperation, he fervently wished to see his beloved once more. In his plea, an ancient god heard his laments, looked at him with a smile, and spoke: ‘Little one. I will grant your wish, if your love is true. Each time you close your eyes, you’ll see your beloved in dreams anew. The more you dream and the deeper you feel, a bond between the living and the dead will be real. This artifact will bridge that chasm, as vast as the sky and the stars, to make that connection last.’ The god handed the prince a heart made of crystal. ‘"This shall your broker heart replace, A tool of love, in its embrace. Though other feelings may sway the way, If love is your guide, you'll find your way. With the one you cherish, you shall connect, As long as love is the force you select."’ The prince accepted it, and thus, he began. At first, all was wonderful. By activating the heart with his magic and thinking of his beloved, he would see her in his dreams. Her presence felt so real, he could almost touch her, feel her warmth. But over time, the connection demanded immense energy. Each dream encounter drained more of his vitality, and the prince began to weaken. The prince, growing weaker, could barely rise to eat. His only desire was to return to sleep, where he could see his beloved and feel her love. ‘I want to see her, I want to see her, I have to see her’ he whispered in desperation. Then, the prince took paper and ink, and began writing a message for anyone who wished to reunite with their lost love: ‘Normally, when we dream, we have this "dream body"; not a real body, but one we create to project ourselves in dreams. The dream body represents our consciousness and can easily be drawn to certain energies, forming a connection with another consciousness or even a soul. For those seeking to reunite with their lost love, know that love itself is the energy that will lead to the connection you seek.’ With these words penned, the prince returned to his bed. He slept and slept until he never awoke again. Zecora smiled, her gaze reflecting the knowledge of a story that many may have forgotten over time. She took another sip of her tea, and with a cheerful expression, she looked directly at you. "Now you understand the why" she said calmly, dropping the rhyme. "It’s said that after the prince’s death, the crystal heart was used to harness the positive feelings of the inhabitants to protect the empire with its light, strengthening the bond with the ponies... though they didn’t account for its other use." Zecora let her words linger in the air as her gaze drifted to the horizon, suggesting that the power of love and its impact on the world were even more complex than we could imagine. "Love is the only thing that can truly solve everything," Zecora continued. "The prince became obsessed with the image of his beloved, corrupting his love. That’s why Twilight must handle it on her own, with her own feelings." Zecora looked up, her gaze fixed on you. "Would you like to continue watching?" Sombra felt life slipping away from him; he was becoming more faint and fragile with every breath he took. He sighed, his voice barely audible in the silence of the room. Twilight was fading too—she was about to wake up. "I love you, Twilight," Sombra whispered, his words emerging from his lips with a weary sigh. Twilight pressed her forehead against his, tears streaming from her eyes as she struggled to keep her composure. She couldn't let it end like this. She pleaded with whoever would listen, any being that could stop it. "What are you doing?" Twilight looked up, her vision blurred by tears. She wiped them away desperately, still fading. "What are you doing? Save his soul!" The voice echoed again, this time closer, but she saw no one. Did they know how to save him? Twilight clung to any hope. "H-how do I save him?! Tell me, please!" This wasn’t helping! She looked back at Sombra, who was still disappearing, just like her. She held onto him tighter and whispered, her heart hanging by a thread. "I love him." That moment of silence, with the world collapsing around them, felt eternal. The voice took its time returning; only Twilight's sobs broke the stillness. "Yes, that will be enough." Those were the last words from the voice. The crumbling place, the falling darkness, everything was enveloped in a white light. The glow blinded Twilight for a moment. That light—it reminded her of... the Crystal Heart? Once everything was consumed by light, Twilight opened her eyes and looked at her hooves. She was no longer disappearing? She quickly searched for Sombra but didn’t see him anywhere. Where was he? Panic surged through her as she walked through the... wait, what had happened around her? Everything was white, a vast white void. She couldn’t see anything, and no matter how far she walked, she got nowhere. "Hello?" Twilight called, her voice lost in the emptiness. "Sombra?" she shouted, more desperately. "Don't shout." Twilight spun around immediately, expecting to see Sombra, but it wasn’t him. Standing in front of her was... a crystal pony? "What are you doing in Sombra's dreams?" "Dreams?" the pony chuckled kindly. "No, dear, we're no longer in his dreams. We're in the void." Twilight’s eyes widened, perplexed. Was this the same dark place where she always met the Beast? That grim and shadowy sub-reality was now a vast white void. "What...? How...? Why...? And if that's the case, where's Sombra? Has he disappeared?" she exclaimed, filled with questions, feeling panic take over her again. The pony lifted a hoof calmly, gently touching her head. "Calm down, calm down. Everything will be fine. As for that unicorn, don't worry, his soul will soon ascend to the astral plane," they said with a smile. Twilight’s eyes widened in shock. What was this pony talking about? Not Sombra's, but this enigmatic pony walking beside her. The sorrow they carried seemed to have become tangible. "So..." she hesitated, unsure how to continue, "You caused all of this? The void, the darkness...?" she asked softly, though part of her feared the answer. The pony nodded without looking back. "Yes, this place is projected thanks to the magic of the Crystal Heart. It allows a connection between two specific planes, enabling two souls to connect, using emotions as the main core. My desperation to bring her back tainted everything, to the point where it became an endless hell. And yet, you... You brought light here. Your feelings, and his, were stronger than my sorrow." Twilight felt her mind struggling to grasp what was happening. The Crystal Heart? Two planes connected by emotions? Her confusion deepened, but something inside her told her there was more to this crystal pony than they were revealing. She took a deep breath, trying to calm her racing heart. "But... how did I change things?" she asked, her voice trembling but firm, determined to get answers. The pony stopped for a moment, slowly turning their head toward her, with a deep gaze full of wisdom, but also of sadness. "Love, child," they whispered, almost reverently. Her mind screamed that she needed to hurry, but her body barely moved. She couldn’t let him cross that light. He was ascending. “Sombra!” she shouted, but her voice seemed to get lost in the void. He heard her but did not move. His eyes, once filled with dark and determined strength, were now dimmed. The look he gave her was full of resignation, as if he had already made his decision. “Twilight...” his voice was soft, barely a whisper. “There’s nothing more you can do. The best... is for me to go.” Twilight felt the world shattering around her upon hearing those words. She couldn’t accept it. She couldn’t let him give up! “No!” she cried, running towards him, struggling against the invisible force trying to push her back. “Don’t go, Sombra! You can’t do this!” Sombra closed his eyes for a moment, his shoulders sagging as if carrying the weight of centuries. “I’ve caused too much harm, Twilight,” he continued, his voice tinged with overwhelming sadness. “Maybe... it’s better this way. At least, if I go... I won’t be a threat to anyone, not even to you.” Twilight reached him, her heart pounding with a mix of desperation and love. She looked at him with tear-filled eyes, shaking her head, unable to accept what she was hearing. "I'm fine, Spike," she reassured him, her voice tired but filled with affection. "The nightmares have ended... and I found something in the process." Spike raised an eyebrow, still concerned but also intrigued by Twilight's words. He had never seen her like this before—tired, but at the same time filled with a strange happiness. "You found something? What did you find?" he asked, curious. Spike noticed that Twilight was avoiding giving him details about what she had discovered, but he decided to leave her to her mystery for now. Instead, he focused on recalling the past two weeks of his trip. “So, Spike, how have you been? What have you been up to these past two weeks?” she asked. "Oh, it was great! I had so much fun!" he exclaimed, animated. "I saw amazing places, tried new foods, and met some cool folks. But nothing beats being home." Spike kept pressing Twilight, desperate to know what she had found. "Come on, Twilight, tell me what you found. You can't just leave me hanging like this," he complained, a hint of frustration in his voice. "Twilighttt, tell me what you found!" Spike looked at her with frustration, tired of her evasive answers. "Twilight, I'm serious!" he exclaimed, crossing his arms in front of him. Twilight chuckled softly, clearly enjoying keeping him in suspense. "It's hard to explain, Spike..." she admitted, a mischievous gleam in her eyes. "But I'll tell you something..." Spike leaned in, eager for information, finally getting something real from Twilight. "Come on, tell me!" he urged, still a bit frustrated but equally intrigued. Twilight smiled playfully and leaned closer to him, speaking in a low voice as if sharing a secret. "I found a Dream's Fading Shadow," she whispered, a mysterious smile on her lips. Spike stared at her in confusion, not entirely sure what she was talking about. "What's that?" he repeated, his voice full of curiosity. "I don't think I've ever heard of that before. What exactly is it? Did you find the cause of your nightmares?" Spike noticed she enjoyed keeping him guessing and eventually gave up. "If you don't want to tell me, then don't. As long as you're okay, that's all that matters," he said, crossing his arms and pouting. Upon arriving home, Spike let out a sigh of relief; it was comforting to return to a place without problems or delusions. "I'm going to say hi to everyone! I'll be back later, Twilight!" Spike exclaimed as he dashed out of the place, eager to tell everyone he was back. That was a sweet thing about him, and for Twilight, it was a relief. She finally had some time alone. She quickly headed up to her room, shutting the windows and everything that might disturb her. Her sheets brushed against her mane, and her head rested on her pillow, ready to sleep. She opened her eyes and felt a familiar sense in the white void surrounding her. She fondly remembered those moments when the beast always seemed to be there, waiting for her. Even though he was no longer the same as before, he still remained in a form she wouldn't have expected. "Well, well, you finally came back. And here I thought you had forgotten me," Sombra said in a playful tone upon sensing Twilight's presence. "I would never do that," Twilight responded with a smile. He no longer looked like the shadowy monster he used to be. His original body was slowly being restored little by little. "Oh, really? I thought you’d abandoned me for another stallion. I can't get out yet, so I get very jealous when you're not here," Sombra said with a teasing smile, moving closer and resting his forehead against Twilight's. "When will it be ready?" Twilight asked, blushing from the close contact. Sombra pulled back a little, looking at her fondly. "It'll still be a while before my physical body is completely restored. The process is quite slow. But as long as you keep coming here, I can use your magic as a power core. This was an excellent idea!" he said, brimming with enthusiasm. "Of course, it was my idea," Twilight replied with determination. "Though, if you can speed up the process a bit, I wouldn’t mind at all." Sombra smirked and looked at her with a hint of sarcasm. "Really? Have you looked in the mirror? Using too much magic could get you in trouble. It's a definite no," he said firmly. Twilight smiled slightly, seeing his protective attitude. She could already imagine what it would be like when his physical body was restored and he could finally leave that surreal, dark space. "Why did you take so long today?" Sombra asked, trying not to sound too possessive. Though the worst part of him had disappeared with the destruction of the last fragment, there were still some remnants of his old bad attitudes, but he controlled them easily. "Jealous?" Twilight laughed, causing Sombra to blush. "I went to pick up Spike today. It’s going to be harder for me to stay here for long now," she said, with a touch of disappointment in her voice. "Oh, that little dragon," Sombra said with a mischievous tone. "I can't wait to see the look on his face when I can get out of here and present myself as your partner." "Don't do that. Do you want to give him a heart attack?" Twilight exclaimed, blushing and with a worried look. "That would be quite a spectacle!" Sombra joked with a teasing smile. "Imagine everyone's faces. I'd love to see it!" "Don't even talk about that! How am I supposed to explain this to the princesses? And the girls?" Twilight muttered, anxious. "I’m getting cold sweats just thinking about it!" Sombra leaned in closer, gently pressing his forehead against Twilight's, their horns playfully bumping together. "Shh, don’t worry. You're not alone in this," he whispered, making Twilight shiver in a comical way. "We'll figure it out when the time comes. After all, we're a great team!" Twilight smiled, relieved and delighted that Sombra's attitude toward her remained so playful. She was eager for the moment when they could be on the same physical plane without restrictions, without barriers or limitations. She couldn't wait. "Yeah, we will..." the pony whispered. Twilight tilted her head slightly, feeling drawn to Sombra's soft presence. Their foreheads remained together, and the tingling in her consciousness only grew. Sombra lifted one of his hooves and gently stroked Twilight's cheek, causing a shiver to run through her entire body. They gazed into each other's eyes with tenderness and understanding, without needing words. In that instant, Twilight took the initiative. She leaned in a bit closer, closing her eyes, while a light blush spread across her face. Twilight's lips neared Sombra's, and both responded to the kiss with equal happiness. Their hearts beat strongly as their lips met in a gentle dance, and at that moment, nothing else mattered. It was just the two of them, united in a moment of connection and happiness amidst the dark void. When they finally pulled apart, Sombra started to laugh. "Should I be worried? That felt pretty real!" he joked, lightening the mood. Twilight blushed even more at Sombra's laughter and pulled away a bit, though he still kept his hoof on her waist with tenderness. Sombra's laughter was light and infectious, and Twilight couldn't help but smile too. She shook her head, laughing softly. "You're killing the vibe." she said with sarcasm before leaning in to give him another kiss. "I suppose that's what happens when two souls are so connected," she admitted, with a tender and affectionate tone.
