Twilight and King Sombra began to review the fragments of the spell and examine the texts for clues before they vanished into the air.
As Twilight immersed herself in a meticulous analysis, King Sombra tried to help, but his efforts didn’t seem to be going in the right direction.
“Hmm, this looks like it’s… where it’s supposed to be?” Sombra murmured, knocking over a pile of books while trying to reach one on the top of a shelf.
“No, no, no! That’s not how it’s done!” Twilight exclaimed, turning around with a mix of frustration and exasperation. “What are you doing?! Weren’t you supposed to be skilled at this? Didn’t they teach you how to handle magical books?”
Sombra straightened up, a bit embarrassed, and brushed dust off his cape.
“Well, this isn’t exactly my strong suit,” he said with an ironic smile. “My specialty is curses and dark enchantments, not magical research.”
Twilight looked at him incredulously but couldn’t help a small smile at his clumsiness.
“Perfect!” she muttered, smacking her forehead. “Just stay there and try not to cause any more disasters, okay?”
Sombra raised his hooves in surrender, clearly willing to follow Twilight’s advice, while she returned to her work with a resigned sigh.

Twilight sighed and moved to the next image, which showed the floating city of Cloudsdale in all its splendor.

Facing the Unexpected
In the library, the atmosphere was enveloped in an unusual calm, interrupted only by the soft rustle of pages and the occasional whisper of the wind coming through the open window.

Suddenly, Rainbow Dash stopped and, looking forward, saw Sombra sitting in the armchair with Twilight beside him. The conversation came to a screeching halt, and the group fell silent, staring at the shadow king.
“Girls!” Twilight said, startled to see her friends.
“King Sombra?!” Rainbow Dash exclaimed, surprised and wide-eyed.
“Uh, this is…” Twilight stammered, unsure of how to introduce Sombra.
Sombra, for his part, stood up from the armchair, feeling the tension in the air. His eyes met those of the newly arrived ponies, and his expression changed from surprise to a diplomatic smile.

An Unexpected Return
It was a day like any other in Ponyville. Twilight Sparkle was in her personal library in the Castle of Friendship, surrounded by books, scrolls, and magical artifacts of all kinds.
She was working on a new experimental spell she had discovered in an ancient book titled Extraordinary Enchantments for the Curious Unicorn .

“King Sombra?!” Twilight exclaimed, her eyes filled with disbelief. “But how...?! You were destroyed by the Crystal Heart!”
King Sombra looked up from the book, surprised and clearly confused.
“Me? Destroyed? By the Crystal Heart?” he repeated, frowning. “What are you talking about, Sparkle? Did you fail another one of your experiments?”
Twilight blinked, utterly bewildered.
“What do you mean, what am I talking about? You... What are you talking about? You were defeated a long time ago... you shattered into a thousand pieces.”
King Sombra looked at her as if she were a bit disoriented.
“Well, this is the first I’ve heard of that. I was in my chambers, having a rather pleasant nap, and now... I’m here, in your... castle?” he said, looking around as if evaluating the place for the first time. “And honestly, this doesn’t make much sense.”
Twilight put a hoof to her head, trying to process the situation.
“But... but that’s not possible...” she murmured, her thoughts swirling like leaves in the wind. “There must be some explanation for this. It has to be a mistake with the spell!”
King Sombra watched her for a moment, then sighed as if deciding it wasn’t worth worrying too much about.
“Good luck with that, Sparkle. In the meantime, I’ll be in the library. I’ve heard you have an excellent collection of dark books. Where is the curse section?”

Twilight, hearing the question, tensed slightly. She looked at Sombra with an evasive expression, trying to avoid the topic.
“Oh, you know,” she said quickly, “I have my things. It’s nothing important.”
Sombra frowned, noticing the evasion in her response. It wasn’t as if he didn’t understand what it meant to stay awake for so long, but the way Twilight avoided the question seemed a bit concerning.
“Haven’t you slept?” he asked, his tone a little more serious now.
Twilight turned back to her book, trying to focus on the words to avoid Sombra’s inquisitive gaze.
“No, it’s not that,” she murmured. “I just… haven’t found anything useful yet, and I don’t want to waste time.”
Sombra leaned forward, a mix of concern and curiosity on his face. What could he do? He had decided not to cross the line, but after hearing Twilight, he slowly got up from his armchair, stretching his limbs with a weary grimace. Then, looking at Twilight with a mixture of curiosity and mischievous malice, he asked:
“So, where will you sleep?”
Twilight looked up and answered without thinking much:
“In my room, of course.”
Sombra raised an eyebrow, smiling mockingly.
“Oh, really? Wasn’t I supposed to be under your constant surveillance?” he said, his voice laden with amusement.
Twilight blushed, not knowing how to respond. Her annoyed expression was almost comical.
Sombra laughed softly, appreciating Twilight’s reaction.
“It won’t be necessary,” he said, rising from the armchair and moving a bit to the side. “You could sleep here.”
He gestured towards the space next to the armchair, as if inviting Twilight to come closer. Twilight stood stunned by the gesture and blushed, her mind racing at the unexpected invitation.
Sombra noticed her reaction and, seeing her blush more, quickly became nervous. He straightened up and raised his hooves in a gesture of surrender.
“Don’t worry, I won’t do anything weird,” he clarified quickly. “I just thought we could share the space in a… more comfortable way.”
Twilight, still blushing and bewildered, took a quick step back, trying to regain her composure. Her heart started racing; sharing a space with him? She wouldn’t survive the discomfort.
“Oh, um…” she stammered. “Okay, then. I’ll be back to get… another pillow!”
She hurried away, her face as red as an apple, as she tried to hide her agitation.
Sombra laughed softly as Twilight hurried away, his laughter resonating in the library. The situation had taken an unexpected turn, and now he found himself in a dilemma. He had never shared a bed—or in this case, an armchair—with another pony before. Although he wouldn’t admit it easily, he was nervous.
He finally sighed. Well, if they were going to do this, the only thing they had to do was sleep. Maybe it wasn’t so bad after all, and if he thought about it, the company wasn’t so unpleasant.
A short time later, Twilight returned with a pillow and a blanket. She approached the armchair where Sombra was sitting, stopped there, as if waiting for permission from her companion to settle beside him. Sombra looked at her, noticing she seemed cute, a bit flushed, and avoiding his gaze.
“Alright, let’s do this,” he said decisively.
Twilight’s expression turned into an enigma of confusion. Do what? What do two adult ponies do together on an armchair? She blushed intensely, as if her retinas were about to tremble. Sombra looked at her, confused, until he realized what he had said and quickly corrected himself.
“S-Sleep! I mean, let’s go to sleep…” he said almost in a rush, with a stammering excuse. “No, don’t worry. I’m not going to do anything weird. I just… thought it would be good to relieve the tension…”

Twilight turned toward him, noticing how close they were. She regretted giving Sombra such a small, unattractive armchair. She feared that if she got any closer, he might hear her heart pounding and think she was a weirdo.
“Well, they are... they are amazing,” Twilight said, smiling as she thought about her friends and wondered how they were doing on their respective missions.
Sombra felt strange hearing the enthusiasm in Twilight’s voice. The way she spoke about her friends made him wish that she would talk about him that way as well. However, he knew that was not possible; all he had heard since his arrival was the negative image others had of him.
“Oh, and there’s Spike too,” Twilight continued.
Sombra was startled. A male name? Did Twilight have contact with the opposite sex? Suddenly, he felt a strong curiosity to learn more about him. He tried to remain calm so as not to seem strange; he didn’t want Twilight to think he was a crazy creep, despite his other self already having that reputation.
“S-Spike?” he repeated, forcing a smile that seemed more false than the kindness in his heart. “Is he a friend of yours?” he asked, hoping the answer would be negative, though he couldn’t help his curiosity.
“Yes, he’s my friend, my little helper, my little dragon,” Twilight continued with a smile; Spike had been away in the land of dragons for a few days.
“A dragon? Really?” Sombra said, sighing with relief as he masked his happiness.
“Does the other Twilight not have a Spike?” Twilight asked with curiosity.
“Not that I’ve seen…” Sombra replied, reminiscing about his world of origin.
Twilight felt somewhat uncomfortable, looked away, and made a face as if she wanted to ask something but wasn’t sure how to phrase it. Finally, she gathered the courage and asked.
“Were you... close to the other Twilight?” she asked almost in a whisper, though Sombra heard her clearly.
“Well... not really,” he replied, wondering why Twilight was so curious. “I only saw her occasionally, and every time I did… it was strange.”
“Strange?” Twilight asked, eager to learn more details, clearly intrigued.
Sombra thought for a moment and then sighed.
“Yes... sometimes she acted in quite... unsettling ways. Well, everyone has their flaws, but sometimes our gazes would meet, and it was... weird,” Sombra said, recalling those eyes and that expression his mind seemed to constantly try to block out.
Lost in his thoughts, he felt something warm resting against him. Twilight had fallen asleep; she might not have even heard his last words. Perhaps that was for the best.
Sombra smiled, amazed at how adorable Twilight looked asleep. At that moment, he thought she was even more charming when she was calm than when she scolded him. Although teasing her was usually a fun game, there was nothing like seeing that serene expression on her face.
He gently stroked her head, resting his own on hers.
“Rest, little princess,” he murmured tenderly before falling asleep beside her.
“Spike!” The voice rang out in the room, charged with frantic excitement.
The sound reached Spike’s ears as he was in his usual corner, watching attentively. He woke from his resting state and moved on all fours toward the source of the call.
The room was in complete disarray, with books and jars scattered everywhere. Torn and shredded papers lay on the floor, as if dragged in a fit of anxiety.
Spike carefully advanced to avoid stepping on the papers, knowing that Twilight hated it when the documentation got damaged. She had a tendency to hit him when things didn’t turn out the way she wanted
Amidst the confusion, there was an unsettling energy in the air. He swallowed hard as he approached, feeling the weight of the tension.
“I’m here,” Spike said, approaching her with his tail between his legs and a touch of nervousness. “Twilight.”
Twilight turned to him, her eyes glowing with a disturbing intensity. Those eyes, those eyes were not normal.
“Spikey, the boring king is hiding from me!” Twilight said, her manic laughter escaping in loud, uncontrolled cackles that echoed through the room.
Spike, confused, frowned as he watched Twilight with growing concern. Though trembling with nerves, he tried to stay calm; he knew she didn’t like weakness.
“T-The boring king?” he asked nervously, his voice trembling.
Twilight leaned toward him, her eyes shining with an uncontrolled and obsessive intensity.
“Yes! It’s a game! A game to keep me entertained! We’re playing hide and seek!” she said, her voice filled with a mix of exasperation and frenzy. “I can’t let anything break my perfection!”
Spike, feeling increasingly uncomfortable, took a slight step back, unsure how to handle the growing madness emanating from his owner.
Meanwhile, Twilight continued to search frantically among her papers and formulas, her uncontrolled laughter resonating through the room. She was completely immersed in the intensity of her obsession, as if the world around her had ceased to exist.
“I’ll find you, Sombra,” she murmured with a disturbing mix of tenderness and determination, her voice laden with a manic promise.
A Book’s Truth
“Wait, are you telling me that your brother married the current ruler of the Crystal Empire in this world?” Sombra asked, clearly confused, as if the idea was hard to grasp. “So, is he the consort king? Or how does it all work here?”
Twilight couldn’t help but laugh at his confusion; it was amusing to see him struggle to understand. He had been in this state since she told him about her brother in the morning. She had slept so deeply that she hadn’t even noticed when she fell asleep last night.
She regretted that this moment was perfect for getting more details about Sombra’s world, and just when she was about to reach the best part—her other self—she had to fall asleep. Why did that have to happen? Plus, they had woken up hugging each other that morning. Had she drooled on him? She hoped not!
Twilight tried to compose herself and responded with a playful smile.
“Yes, exactly. My brother married the ruler of the Crystal Empire, and yes, he is the consort king. Although, in reality, that title doesn’t grant him much power in the administration of the empire; he’s simply the husband of the ruler. He supports Cadance as much as he can, but she remains the primary leader.”
Sombra frowned, still trying to process the information.
“That’s… complicated,” he said, shaking his head. “So, in your world, real authority mainly rests with the ruler, while the consort king has a more ceremonial role.”
Sombra wasn’t particularly interested in this; he knew that becuase the situation was similar in his world, though Twilight didn’t have to know that.
What really troubled him was what had happened that morning. How had he ended up hugging her while sleeping, and even sharing a bed with her?! They weren’t even engaged!
He had never been interested in any mare before; he even believed he was incapable of love. He had planned to be a single king until the empire turned to dust. Marriage wasn’t in his plans.
But something had changed yesterday. He felt a small click inside, something he needed to hide as quickly as possible. It was completely unnecessary.
Twilight was reading the book that the king had confiscated the night before so she could rest. The book extensively covered the theory of distortion and space-time displacement, but it was only that: theory.

Sombra nodded and left the library to get the water.

“Now, what are we going to do?” she said, as she again held the book closed.
She stood up to return the book to the shelf from which she had taken it. But as she placed the book and turned around, it fell back to the floor and opened.
“But what…” Twilight approached to pick it up. When she glanced at the pages, she noticed that the letters seemed to be shifting.
“A book with magical displacement?” Twilight murmured.
Books with magical displacement were a kind of protection to safeguard high-level spells. The letters would always change and shift, preventing the correct spell from being performed. But how was the book reacting to her? Was it reacting to her magic? Or her emotions?
The letters began to form clear and readable sentences, creating understandable statements. Twilight read quickly, fearing the words would shift again.
“Interdimensional rifts… spatial magic… damage to the space-time flow…” she continued reading rapidly, her mind absorbing each word. Eureka! She found a spell to return a being to their original dimension.
Finally, although it didn’t explain how her experiment had brought King Sombra here, at least there was a way to send him back!
“Send him back…” Twilight murmured, realizing that by doing so, she would probably never see him again.
She searched the book for any pages indicating if it was possible to make frequent dimensional travels. However, the book, as if sensing her emotional imbalance, reactivated its displacement magic.
“No, no!” Twilight exclaimed, frustrated. She could no longer understand what the book was saying. She didn’t know if there was a way to allow him to return someday, even if she sent him back.
“Wait… why would I want him to come back?” Twilight murmured, realizing that her goal was to send him to his world, right? So, why was she so concerned about whether he could come back?
The sound of footsteps pulled her from her thoughts. Sombra was already in the hallway near the library door. In a state of panic, she wondered what she would say: Good news? Bad news? She looked one way and then the other, unsure of what to do. She remembered there was a small hatch behind that shelf, so she quickly hid the book and…
“Sparkle?” King Sombra asked as he entered the library and didn’t find Twilight. “Where are you? I brought your water.”
Twilight emerged from behind one of the shelves.
“S-Sombra! I was just… you know, reading…” she excused herself. Why was she doing this? She should just tell him she had found the solution to all their problems.
“Reading? Again? I told you to take a break,” King Sombra said, pouting because the alicorn never listened to him. He placed the water on the table and sat in one of the chairs.
Twilight sat in the other chair, taking the glass of water, but she really couldn’t drink it after what she had discovered. She wanted to tell him about the finding but felt that the moment had passed.
Quiet Moments
Sombra woke up abruptly, feeling a shiver run through his body. He turned in the armchair and extended a hoof, searching for Twilight beside him, but found only the cold emptiness of the worn-out sheets.
“Sparkle?” he murmured, still groggy. He blinked several times, trying to clear the sleep fog as his eyes adjusted to the dimness of the library. Where could she be at this hour? he wondered, his mind still dazed.

Curious, Sombra approached the source of the light and peeked inside. There was Twilight, standing on a balcony, gazing at the night sky. Her eyes were fixed on the stars, and her mane floated lightly with the night breeze. She seemed so focused that Sombra hesitated to interrupt her.
But of course, he couldn’t resist the temptation to make a sudden appearance. After all, what kind of fearsome king would he be if he didn’t know how to approach unnoticed?
With a mischievous smile, he slid up to her, making sure to make no noise. He stopped a couple of steps behind Twilight, enjoying the moment when she was unaware of his presence.
“Sparkle,” he said suddenly, breaking the silence with his deep voice.
Twilight jumped, spinning around quickly with wide eyes.
“Sombra!” she exclaimed, putting a hoof to her chest. “Are you trying to give me a heart attack?”
“It would be a loss for Equestria,” he replied with a sarcastic smile. “But I admit it was fun seeing you jump like that.”

Twilight let out a little laugh.

“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to wake you,” Twilight said, a bit embarrassed by her clumsiness.
Sombra looked at her for a moment, still adjusting to waking up, and then gave a small smile.
“Don’t worry,” he replied with a hoarse, sleepy voice. “At least it was an... interesting wake-up call.”
Sombra, still half asleep and somewhat disoriented, looked at her with squinted eyes. With a lazy smile on his face, he murmured:
“It’s not so bad waking up... to the sight of an angel.”
Twilight froze, surprised by his words. Realizing what he had just said, Sombra blinked, a flash of understanding crossing his eyes as a blush began to rise on his cheeks.
“I mean... well, you know... I... uh...” he tried to correct himself awkwardly, aware that his words had come directly from his sleepiest and most sincere thoughts. Now he couldn’t control himself; he wasn’t saying these things just to annoy her but genuinely felt them.
“...You know... because of the wings... and all that...” he added, trying to justify himself as the blush spread across his face.
Twilight felt the heat rising to her cheeks, inevitably blushing at Sombra’s comment. Trying to maintain her composure, she cleared her throat and looked away.
“Uh... well, you should go back to sleep,” she said, trying to sound casual as she hurriedly got up. “I... I’ll go check some books in the back of the library.”
Before Sombra could respond, Twilight had already turned and was walking away, clearly embarrassed. He watched her leave, still feeling the blush on his own face. When he was alone, Sombra let his head drop into his hooves and muttered to himself:

“Maybe I...” she murmured to herself, but quickly shook her head. “It can’t be.”
The blush on her face faded a bit, but the weight of the situation remained. She sighed, staring at a fixed point in the library, lost in her thoughts. Finally, she made her way to a particular bookshelf.
Beneath it, hidden by a latch only she knew about, was a trapdoor. With a bit of effort, she lifted the lid and there it was: the book on spatial distortion, which might contain the answer to all of this. She had hidden it impulsively, not entirely sure what had led her to do so.
“I guess it’s time to tell him,” she murmured, resigned. These past days had been wonderful, filled with a strange camaraderie with Sombra, and she knew she shouldn’t feel this way. It was all a problem for him, but... was there really such a rush to go back? She wondered.
“I don’t think it would hurt much if I told him tomorrow, would it?” she said quietly, as if trying to convince herself that delaying the inevitable was a good idea, even though she knew deep down it wasn’t.
She closed the trapdoor again, putting the book back, hesitating for a moment about whether she was doing the right thing. She stood there, contemplating the decision she had made. After a pause, she wondered what difference it would make if he stayed a little longer in her world.

He eyed the dessert with skepticism, wondering why the alicorn was offering him something that seemed so… solid and unappetizing.
“Is this… a brownie?” he asked, with a mix of curiosity and doubt as he turned the piece on his plate. “Why would you give me a brick to eat?”
Twilight let out a soft laugh, trying not to be offended.
“It’s not a brick,” she said with a smile. “It’s a very popular sweet here. I promise it’s delicious.”
Sombra took the small piece cautiously, examining the dessert as if it were an exotic creature. He brought it to his mouth and took a first bite. His eyes widened in amazement as he tasted it, as if he had just discovered a new universe of sweetness.
“This is… incredible!” he exclaimed, with a look of wonder. “Why didn’t you tell me this existed before? No, no—why is this the first time I’m trying this?”

“Are there no desserts in your world, or what? I’m starting to think that where you come from is the worst place to live,” she said with a playful tone, though underlying her words was a hint of concern.

“Yes, everything’s fine. It’s just… I’m not used to being so relaxed,” Sombra admitted, stretching his legs a bit. It had only been the two of them so far, and maybe that’s why he felt so attached to her. As the saying goes, two mice together will love each other until death. Perhaps that was what was happening to him. “By the way, aren’t your friends taking too long on their missions?”

“Girls, I found a blue book!” Applejack said as she picked it up.
Twilight panicked and ran to her before she could do anything. With a flash of magic, she snatched the book from Applejack’s hooves.
“Not that book!” Twilight exclaimed as the book floated toward her with a magical aura.
Everyone stared at her, surprised. Including Sombra, who watched her with a mix of worry and confusion.
“Uh, sugarcube, are you alright?” Applejack asked, genuinely concerned.

“Three days?” Sombra repeated, his face showing a mix of disbelief and rage. He was about to say more but stopped. “You’ve had the damned book for three days and didn’t tell me?! I could have left three days ago!”
Twilight tried to approach him, but Sombra moved away, his expression hardening. The anger on his face was genuine, and there was no trace of the mocking attitude he usually displayed. This time, he was serious.
“Sombra… I…” Twilight tried, her voice almost a whisper.
“No! You don’t know the things that could have happened in my absence,” Sombra said, with a mix of frustration and exhaustion in his voice. “I have duties to attend to, ponies to care for… and you…” he sighed deeply, clearly upset. “You’ve ruined everything.”
King Sombra turned, his posture rigid, as if the only solution to his anger was to leave as quickly as possible. Twilight stood there, feeling the weight of her regret and the gravity of the situation she had triggered.

“What did you think?” he said in a calmer but firm tone. “That it was a good idea to keep me here, not knowing for how long, while my home falls apart? Is that it? Does it seem like fun to you?” he added with sarcasm and irritation, noticing the pain in the young alicorn’s eyes.
“I’m sorry,” Twilight repeated, looking at the floor, unable to face his gaze.
“And it’s not just that you hid the truth from me,” Sombra continued, with a touch of disappointment in his voice. “You lied to me, Twilight. You’re just like everyone else.”

Sombra was furious, but in reality, more than anger, he felt sadness and disappointment. In his life, he had learned not to trust anyone; everyone had deceived him, from his parents to his subjects. To him, all ponies were liars, even himself.
But meeting Twilight, so sincere and genuine, he thought he had finally found someone to trust. How wrong he was.
He wondered if he had been too harsh with her. Maybe he shouldn’t have shouted so much. But his anger was genuine; if she hadn’t trusted him with the book, it was his fault. The fault was his for not being able to gain Twilight’s trust. Yes, it was all his fault…
He sighed, realizing he couldn’t leave things as they were. If he had to return, he needed to resolve it properly.
Suddenly, a strange light began to envelop the room. It shone brightly, and Sombra could barely see anything.
“What’s happening?” he murmured, confused, trying to understand the source of the light.

“What is that?” she murmured, realizing it resembled the burst caused by her spell. “Oh no!” she exclaimed, opening the door and rushing in.
“Sombra!” she cried, blinded by the brightness filling the room.

Twilight moved closer to where Sombra had stood just moments before, her hooves trembling with each step. She reached out, hoping against hope that he might somehow reappear.

“No... no, no, no...” Twilight muttered, her voice rising in desperation. She jumped to her hooves, her mind racing to make sense of what had just happened. She knew the light wasn’t natural; it was magical, something she couldn’t easily explain. What was that? I didn’t even use the spell from the book! Was it always meant to be temporary?
Her gaze drifted back to the spot where Sombra had been, hoping to find some clue. But there was nothing, just the remnants of their earlier argument and the tension lingering in the air.
Her eyes fell on the book that had started this entire mess, lying abandoned on the floor. She picked it up carefully, her heart heavy with regret.
“Think, Twilight, think,” she whispered to herself, her voice trembling as she tried to regain her composure. “The light, the book… there has to be a connection.”
Twilight felt the cold air on her coat, a creeping sense of fear growing inside her. She closed her eyes for a moment, trying to focus her thoughts, clutching the old book tightly in her hooves as she scanned the room once more.
Suddenly, there was a loud crash as the door swung open. Her friends stood there, their faces full of concern.
“Twilight! What happened?” Rarity gasped, her eyes wide as she took in the sight of her friend sitting on the floor.
Rainbow Dash and Pinkie Pie hovered behind her, their expressions shifting from worry to confusion.
“We heard you shout and came running,” Applejack added, her voice filled with urgency. “What’s goin’ on? Are ya alright?”
Twilight looked at them, her face etched with sorrow, still clutching the book tightly.
“Sombra… he disappeared…” she murmured.
“What do you mean, disappeared?” Rainbow Dash asked, narrowing her eyes.
“Twilight, what’s going on?” Rarity pressed, glancing around the dimly lit room.
“Sombra, he… suddenly… the light, it…,” Twilight stuttered, struggling to form a coherent sentence.
Applejack stepped closer, placing a comforting hoof on Twilight’s shoulder.
“Sugarcube, where is he? Where’d he go?” she asked gently, trying to stay calm.
“He…!” Twilight began, but couldn’t finish. She didn’t know. Had he gone back to his world? How was that possible? What if he’d been sent somewhere worse, like a dimension full of lava? Panic gripped her heart.
Her friends noticed her distressed state and quickly moved to console her.
“Darling, maybe it’s for the best. Perhaps he’s back in his world, safe and sound,” Rarity offered soothingly.
“Yeah! He’s probably having a ‘Yay, I’m Home!’ party!” Pinkie Pie added, bouncing with enthusiasm.
Twilight felt a sting of sadness at that thought. Had he really gone back home? She knew she should be happy, but she couldn’t shake her doubts. She didn’t want things to end like this; she wished she could apologize, truly apologize. Now, she felt like she might never have the chance. Would she have to live with these unspoken feelings for the rest of her life?
“Why are we worried about him? It’s better that he’s gone for good!” Rainbow Dash declared cheerfully.
“He… wasn’t all bad,” Twilight murmured.
Twilight was lost in her thoughts, her eyes scanning the now dimly lit library, when the atmosphere suddenly shifted. A peculiar, mischievous chuckle echoed through the room, making Twilight's ears perk up in surprise.
“Well, well, well, what have we here?” came a voice, dripping with playful curiosity. Discord, the chaotic spirit of disharmony, materialized out of thin air with a flourish of his mismatched limbs and a cheeky grin on his face. His eyes gleamed with a mixture of amusement and intrigue as he took in the scene before him.
“Discord!” Twilight exclaimed, her relief mingling with frustration. “I have no time for you now!”
Discord floated lazily above the ground, twirling an imaginary mustache with one claw and lazily plucking a flower from nowhere with the other. “Oh, dear, Sombra’s gone missing? How delightfully troublesome!” He examined Twilight with an exaggerated pout. “And here I was, hoping to just enjoy a peaceful evening of chaos.”
“How long have you been watching?” Twilight asked, frustrated.
“Hmm, I don’t know, maybe since that little lovers’ spat. Fluttershy came to me, begging for my help,” he said with a mischievous grin. “I thought it would be a snooze-fest, but oh, how I was delightfully surprised!”
Suddenly, someone walked through the door—it was Fluttershy, entering slowly.
“Discord agreed to help us… What happened?” Fluttershy asked as she walked in and saw everyone sitting on the floor with Twilight. All except Twilight looked at her with expressions that seemed to say, "This is not a good time."
Twilight tried to keep her focus.
“This isn’t a joke, Discord. I need to find Sombra. The book—”
“Oh, the book! Yes, I heard a little something about that,” Discord interrupted, his eyes lighting up with genuine interest. “Teleportation runes, ancient magic, distortion, and all that jazz. Quite the dramatic twist, if I may say so.”
“Do you know anything about where he might have gone?” Twilight asked, her voice tinged with desperation. “Or how to reverse this?”
Discord blinked in confusion, then started to smile.
“Oh, my dear Twilight, why would you want to do that?” he said with a twinkle in his eye.
Twilight jumped. She couldn’t possibly mean that. She obviously didn’t want to bring him back, right?
“No... No, that’s not what I meant! I just want to know if he’s okay!” Twilight exclaimed quickly.
Discord’s eyes twinkled with mischief.
“Well, I might know a thing or two about teleportation. After all, a little bit of chaos can sometimes fix what’s been magically messed up.” He floated closer to Twilight, examining her with a mock serious expression. “But tell me, what’s in it for me?”
Twilight’s patience was wearing thin. “Discord, this isn’t the time for games. I need your help.”
Discord feigned a dramatic sigh, waving a claw dismissively.
“Very well, very well. I suppose I can help. After all, I do enjoy a good puzzle.” His expression softened, and he floated down to the floor, landing lightly beside Twilight. “But first, let’s see what you’ve been up to.”
He began inspecting the book with an almost childlike curiosity. Twilight watched, exasperated but hopeful, as Discord’s antics quickly turned from whimsical to purposeful.
He started flipping through the ancient text with an uncanny speed, his eyes narrowing as he searched for something specific.
“There’s a lot of ancient magic involved in this,” Discord mused, “but there’s also a hint of—oh, how fascinating—a chaotic twist.” He looked up at Twilight with a sly grin. “You see, teleportation spells can be notoriously unstable when mixed with chaos magic. The book might have attracted a bit of… extra attention.”
Twilight frowned, not entirely following his train of thought.
“So, what does that mean?”
Discord's grin grew even wider.
“Ah, it means the book’s got a touch of chaos magic, which is always so delightfully unpredictable. If I were to hazard a guess, it fed off those chaotic emotions and decided to run the spell all by itself…
All the ponies turned to look at Twilight when Discord mentioned that.
“What?” Twilight asked. Her chaotic emotions? Well, it was true that she had been somewhat unstable at that moment. “Wait, so it was the book’s magic that sent him back to his world? Then what brought Sombra here in the first place?”
Discord lowered the book, suddenly adopting a serious demeanor.
“That…” he murmured in a voice that left everyone hanging. Then he burst into laughter, “Who knows!”
Sombra opened his eyes, breath coming in ragged gasps. He jolted upright, stumbling over his own sheets.
"Was it all just a dream?" he wondered, staring at the ceiling of his room, his bed, his belongings. He was back in his room, a harsh reminder of the strange shift from the palace of Twilight.
"Twilight... Twilight!" he shouted, desperately scanning the room. She wasn't there. He dashed to the balcony, needing to see it, to confirm it. Despite knowing where he was, he needed to see it for himself.
The cold morning air whipped through his black mane, steam escaping his mouth. The chill was almost unbearable; Twilight wasn't there, or maybe he had vanished. No, he had returned home. To his own world.
"But how? Twilight didn't cast the spell... How did I come back?" Sombra murmured, gazing at the Crystal Empire from his balcony. It was a familiar view, but the return was far from comforting. Why? Perhaps he already knew.
He would never see Twilight again.

The sight of him caused an uproar. His subjects reacted as if a ghost had returned, their voices rising in shock and disbelief. It had been so long since King Sombra last walked the streets of the Crystal Empire that it felt almost unreal to him. The radiance of the city—its shimmering towers and crystal-clear skies—had become a distant memory. Now, being back here, it all felt strangely foreign.
“My lord! Where have you been?” cried one of the servants, his voice trembling as tears welled up in his eyes.
Sombra hesitated, unsure of how to respond. “I... well—” He struggled to grasp the situation. What had happened while he was gone? The events that led him here felt too real to have been a dream, yet Twilight was nowhere in sight. Was it time to move on?
Another servant, his expression heavy with concern, added, “Everything fell apart without you here, my lord...”
“Enough,” Sombra interrupted, the exhaustion creeping into his voice. He rose to his hooves, feeling the weight of the past week bearing down on him. “I need to rest. Leave me.” His tone was firm, though his mind remained troubled, especially by thoughts of Twilight. What could have possibly happened in a week? he wondered.
The servants exchanged nervous glances, as if holding back something important. One of them finally stepped forward, his voice filled with hesitancy.
“My lord... We were so relieved by your return that we informed the two princesses…”
Sombra froze. His eyes widened as anger surged through him. “WHAT DID YOU DO?” he bellowed, his frustration boiling over. He had intended to remain under the radar, but now that plan was shattered. The princesses would be on his tail.
“Yes, the princesses requested your presence,” the servant stammered, cowering under Sombra's gaze. “Immediately.”
Grinding his teeth, Sombra muttered under his breath, “Ugh, they're gonna kill me…”
Sombra traveled in his smoke form, the shadows cloaking him as he sped toward the palace of the two alicorns. His mind raced, nerves tighter than he cared to admit. He had much to explain, and he knew the questions would come fast and hard. But deep down, there was a flicker of excitement—a strange, uninvited feeling. Was he eager to see them? He had once shared a complicated relationship with the princesses, a connection he might dare to call... friendship.
Well, how could they not be friends? They’ve known each other for like, over 1000 years! Time really flies, huh?
When he arrived, the sisters stood by the grand balcony, as if they had anticipated his arrival. Sombra descended, his smoky form coalescing into his physical body before them.
“Celestia? Luna?” His voice carried a mix of surprise and caution as he recognized the two alicorns, their majestic forms bathed in the dim light of the palace. For a moment, he thought there might be a warm welcome.
Without warning, Celestia swiftly approached and cornered him against a nearby wall, her presence imposing and dominant. “I’ve had to deal with far too many problems in your absence,” Celestia snapped, her tone as sharp as her gaze. “Did you think you could just return out of nowhere, and everything would fix itself?”
Luna, hovering gracefully beside her sister, smiled mischievously, her eyes twinkling with curiosity. “It’s been so long, Sombra! Where have you been hiding? You’ve become quite the mystery.”
Sombra faltered, thrown off by Celestia's intensity. “I... I didn’t—”
“There’s no time for explanations right now,” Celestia cut him off, her tone leaving no room for argument. “I’ve had enough trouble because of you.”
Sombra’s brow furrowed, the weight of Celestia’s words sinking in. “I had no idea—”
“Of course you didn’t,” Celestia said, her voice softening slightly but still firm. “You’ve been absent.”
She leaned in closer, her voice lowering to a near whisper. “Do you have any idea what happened in your absence?” she pushed him harder against the wall, almost pinning him. “You caused me too much trouble.”
Sombra swallowed hard, realizing just how unpredictable the situation had become. He knew the consequences of upsetting Celestia—and he didn’t want to find himself in Tartarus, surrounded by those who had lost their sanity.
“What... what could’ve possibly happened in a week?” he asked, his voice shaky but trying to remain composed. He knew better than to provoke Celestia when she was like this.
Celestia huffed in irritation and stepped back, giving him some space, though her displeasure was evident. Luna remained silent, watching her sister with practiced patience.
“A lot happened. More than I care to recount,” Celestia said, turning away with a flick of her tail. “We have much to discuss.”
Luna shot Sombra a glance, her eyes full of sympathy. She whispered, “You’re in trouble...”
Sombra sighed in relief as he slid down the wall, finally allowed to breathe. Coming home was always overwhelming, but this? This was something else. His complicated history with Celestia had never fully resolved—her relentless personality, her need for control. It made things... difficult.
“Oh, Sparkle…” he said, nostalgic for the scoldings he used to get from Twilight. Well, anyone would miss Twilight’s scoldings after facing Celestia’s strict lecture. No, could that even be called a lecture? That was violence.
“Those damn—” Celestia murmured, as she gathered a pile of papers and threw them onto the round table in front of King Sombra.
“What is this?” Sombra asked, visibly confused.
“Read,” Celestia commanded, her tone leaving no room for argument. “This is what’s been happening while you were busy neglecting your duties.”
Sombra, still confused, levitated the papers with his magic. As his eyes scanned the report, his expression shifted to one of disbelief. He couldn’t comprehend what he was seeing.
“But... how—” he started, only for Celestia to cut him off again.
“Magic inhibitors,” she growled, “have been distributed illegally. Our guards are doing what they can, but the situation has spiraled out of control. And why?” Her hoof slammed against the table. “Because you weren’t here to do your part!”
Sombra flinched. According to the report, the illegal use of magic inhibitors had increased significantly over the past week, resulting in several attacks on ponies. The criminals used the inhibitors to incapacitate their victims and rob them, or even worse. Yes, his sweet home. He already missed this, though, no, that wasn’t true.
But Celestia wasn’t finished. “And that’s not all. A new drug—one that alters a pony’s magic—is circulating. We don’t know where it came from or what it does, but it’s causing a mess.”
Sombra’s mind raced as he tried to process the consequences of his absence. How had things escalated so quickly? .
“I... I didn’t realize things had become so complicated.”
He was beginning to remember all the problematic things about his world: violent ponies, magic-blocking drugs, covert attacks from terrorist groups threatening Celestia’s dictatorship. In fact, he was surprised that despite everything, harmony wasn’t severely affected. All thanks to the tireless efforts of both sisters to maintain balance, no matter how difficult it was. After all, if the empire is filled with hope and love, those emotions will reflect throughout Equestria. But if hatred and fear take over the Crystal Empire, black crystals will sprout from the ground. Something that still not happened yet.
However, it pained him that no one had taken the time to ask where he had been the past week. Did they not care? Sombra noticed that Luna was visibly restless, as if she wanted to ask him something. Celestia noticed too and, with an exasperated sigh, rolled her eyes.
“Fine, Luna, ask him whatever you’ve been dying to ask,” Celestia said, rolling her eyes.
Luna’s face brightened. “Sombra, where did you go? I’m so curious!” she exclaimed, her hooves slamming on the table, scattering papers everywhere.
“Luna!” Celestia scolded, her irritation growing.
Sombra allowed himself a small smile. The sisters’ banter had always amused him, though he was wise enough to keep from laughing out loud in Celestia’s presence. But what was he supposed to say? That he’d spent the past week in another dimension, with the brightest and most courageous alicorn he had ever met? That he couldn’t stop thinking about her?
No, he couldn’t share that. Not yet.
He looked down, his thoughts drifting back to Twilight, the memory of their last moments together still fresh. No matter how much he tried, he couldn’t shake the feeling that something had been left unresolved.
Clearing his throat, Sombra began to explain. He stuck to the basics—an alternate dimension, a different version of Equestria, a princess of friendship. He couldn’t bring himself to tell them everything.
“A world like that... it sounds wonderful!” Luna’s voice was filled with awe.
Celestia shot him a skeptical look. “Luna, don’t get carried away. Sombra, if you’re lying...”
Sombra raised an eyebrow. “Why would I lie about this?”
Celestia huffed in annoyance. “I’ll forgive you this time for going on ‘vacation’ for a week, but leaving in the middle of the night… your servants panicked and came to tell me that ‘King Sombra has disappeared,’ blah, blah. and I had to clean up your mess. The paperwork alone was a nightmare.”
Luna turned her gaze towards her sister.
“Why didn’t you let your student handle this? You always do the same thing,” her sister asked.
Celestia gave her a piercing look. Only her sister could ask her such questions.
“That incompetent? Definitely not. She disappoints me more every day. That Twilight, besides, she’s been acting strangely lately,” Celestia replied with disdain.
Sombra flinched at hearing that name, his ears perked up. Yes, of course, it wasn’t his Twilight. His Twilight? I mean, the Twilight from the other dimension. Now that he thought about it, why were they so different? "Twilight was… never mind, Sombra. You need to move on" he thought.
He began to reconsider his harsh judgments of the Twilight from his dimension; maybe she wasn’t as bad as he had thought. It wasn’t fair to judge her solely based on a few disconcerting glances.
“By the way,” Sombra said, “how’s Twilight Sparkle doing?”
Celestia's eyes locked onto him with a steely intensity.
“Why do you care? Better get going and don’t forget to submit a report on your ‘vacation.’ Just hearing you gives me a headache,” Celestia said, gesturing for Sombra to leave.
Sombra rose from his seat, fully aware that Celestia's orders were final and needed to be heeded without question. He left the room swiftly, hoping that diving back into his kingly duties would help him move on from the past week's events, or at least provide some distraction.

Sombra stepped out of the grand meeting room, the heavy wooden door creaking shut behind him. He sighed deeply, the weight of the recent conversation still lingering in his chest. The cool corridor of the palace offered some relief from the tension that had filled the room, but the exhaustion clung to him like a shadow.
"Same old Celestia..." he muttered under his breath, shaking his head.
As he was about to make his way down the hall, the door behind him cracked open slightly, and a soft voice called out.
"¡Sombra!" she whispered.
He stopped, turning to see Luna peeking through the barely-opened door. Her eyes twinkled with something more than just the usual formality. She was smiling.
"Is everything alright?" Sombra asked, raising an eyebrow, his voice carrying just a hint of surprise.
Luna stepped out a little further, her smile widening. “I’m happy you’re back,” she said warmly, her words simple but genuine.
Sombra felt a strange warmth in his chest, and he nodded. "Thanks," he replied softly, the weight of the palace’s cold corridors seeming to lift for just a moment. Their relationship with Luna had always been gentler, and it was easier to talk to her than to Celestia.
But then Luna’s smile took on a more mischievous edge. She tilted her head, her eyes glinting. "I can’t help but notice you didn’t share everything in your story." She leaned closer, her voice turning into a playful whisper. “I’ll find out the rest in your dreams. Especially if you had... any secret romances.” She winked, her tone teasing.
Sombra’s face flushed a deep crimson. He shot her a startled look, his expression a mix of embarrassment and annoyance.
"Don’t you dare , Luna. You know I hate it when you invade my dreams," he whispered sharply, trying to keep his composure.
Luna let out a soft, melodic laugh, clearly enjoying his reaction. "Haha, I know!" she said.
Before Sombra could retort, Celestia’s voice boomed from inside the room. “Luna! Get back in here! ”
Luna rolled her eyes, glancing briefly over her shoulder before turning back to Sombra. She lowered her voice once more. “We’ll talk later... somewhere more private.”
Sombra couldn’t help but chuckle at her playfulness. He raised an eyebrow, his grin returning. “Are you trying to get me killed? If your sister catches us, I’m done for.”
"Why? It's just a little talk? Luna asked and laughed lightly, then winked at him one last time before slipping back into the meeting room, closing the door behind her with a soft click.
Sombra stood alone in the quiet hallway, shaking his head with a faint smile. Despite the madness that had unfolded in the last hour, there was a strange comfort in knowing that not everything had changed—and that maybe, just maybe, not everything had to.
Writing the report was difficult—very difficult, especially for him, as he tried to forget everything. But there he was, dipping the quill into ink and transcribing everything onto a scroll. What was he supposed to write?
“This is harder than I thought…” he murmured to himself. He knew he couldn’t leave Celestia’s palace without submitting this report. Why did he feel like a student being punished by his teacher? He was far too old for this.
As he wrote, each letter reminded him of Sparkle: the nights on that old armchair, the days talking while he kept eating brownies, not bricks. They would chat about the differences between their worlds or about meaningless nonsense. And that argument… now it seemed a bit ridiculous. He shouldn’t have been so upset, though it did hurt that she had lied to him. But it would be hypocritical to deny it.
He wrote everything he could. He couldn’t help it. He left the report in a small study nearby and decided to stay there that night before returning to the Crystal Empire, knowing the work that awaited him when he got back.
Morning had arrived, and it was a relief. If there was one thing in common between Twilight and Celestia, it was the terrible quality of their sleeping arrangements. The back pain he felt was proof enough of that. He was already preparing to leave, with many things to attend to upon his return. The hallway was long and quiet, but something soon unsettled him.
He didn't see her coming, didn't even notice her approach. With stealthy steps—only predators move like that, right?
“Sombra! There you are!” Her voice was unnervingly sweet, her smile wide and almost manic. “I’ve been waiting for you.”
Sombra looked confused; in fact, it was hard to look at her. She reminded him so much of her. They were almost identical—the hair, the voice, nearly everything—except for the eyes. Twilight's eyes, as he remembered them, were more beautiful to him. And there were other differences, of course— the wings and the blank flank that this pony always tried to hide with a cloak, though it didn't bother him; he wasn’t different.
Sombra couldn’t help but feel a bit of pity for the pony. She wasn’t exactly what you'd call "Celestia’s student." Oh, Celestia used the title, but treated her more like a secretary than anything else. Despite not having a cutie mark, Twilight’s intellect stood out, always dabbling in experiments—most of them failures. And yet, many viewed her as a symbol of determination, clawing her way up without a cutie mark, even managing to impress the princesses. Hmph, perhaps there is some truth to the idea that hard work can get you anywhere.
“I’ve been somewhat absent lately,” he sighed, his voice heavy with resignation. “I had no idea that my absence would create such a stir. To be honest, I didn’t expect it to cause this much of a commotion.”
Twilight's smile faltered briefly, replaced by an intense, almost feverish gaze.
“Didn’t cause a stir? You’re more than important, Sombra. You’re essential. Without you, I’m lost, incomplete. I can’t function without you by my side,” she whispered, her voice barely audible, edged with desperation. Her calm exterior cracked. “You can’t leave me again, ever. I need you, always.”
“What?” he asked, incredulous and somewhat uneasy. Had he heard that incorrectly? Yes, it must be that. Were so many centuries finally catching up with him?
“Ah! T-The Empire! That’s what I meant! The Empire! It can’t function without you. Yes, I was just thinking about the well-being of the Empire. Nothing more…” Her words stumbled over themselves, her thoughts racing frenetically.
Twilight Sparkle fought to steady her ragged breathing, her eyes revealing the depth of her obsession. Her tone shifted, tinged with a subtle possessiveness, as she tried to redirect the conversation to a subject that truly mattered to her.
“Sombra, where have you been all this time? I’ve been anxiously waiting, wondering when you’d return.” She moved closer, her eyes narrowing as she observed every little detail of his appearance.
Sombra continued to feel an unsettling sensation creeping through his body, as if an unseen wolf were stalking him in the shadows. Despite the growing unease, he chose to ignore it. Why? Because, quite simply, he was a fool.
“Well, you must have seen the report… that Celestia made me write…” He sighed, knowing her student handled all the paperwork the alicorn didn’t want to do. He felt sorry for her in that regard but couldn’t remember when they became so close as to have conversations like this.
Twilight Sparkle’s expression grew darker, her face clouded with a deepening sense of frustration and intensity.
“Yes, I saw the report… but words, cold facts on paper don’t convey everything, do they?” She took a step closer, her body almost inches from his. “I wanted to hear it from you, directly from you. How did you spend your time away from me… I mean, from the Crystal Empire? Or rather, from Equestria.” Her tone wavered between concern and demand. She had been the only one to search tirelessly under every stone after his disappearance that night, but of course, she would never admit it. “And what was that about the ‘Other Twilight’?”
Sombra tensed, realizing Twilight Sparkle had noticed the mention of the “Other Twilight” in his report. He knew he shouldn’t have included Sparkle in the report, but as he wrote, his mind was entirely focused on her. He wondered why she was asking this; but, well, after all, he had also been curious about his evil counterpart in the other world when he disappeared.
“Ah, yes… that .” He chose his words carefully. “It was a brief encounter, nothing to worry about, I assure you.” The discomfort persisted; he found it very unpleasant talking to her, especially when she looked at him as if she wanted to trap him with her gaze.
Silence settled, thick with palpable unease. Typically, in a conversation, one expects a response, right? But Twilight said nothing; she didn’t even seem to be listening. This lack of response only intensified Sombra’s discomfort, amplifying his unease.
“I need to go, Twilight. I have a great deal of work awaiting me,” Sombra said, carefully maneuvering around her before swiftly making his way down the hallway, distancing himself from her presence.
Twilight stood there, motionless, her gaze cast downward. Anyone who passed by could see her lips moving in a continuous, fervent whisper.
“There can only be one Twilight. Only me… only me,” she repeated over and over.

Yet, despite the beauty and radiance above, Sombra was not in the throne room, nor was he wandering the grand halls of the palace. Instead, he was far below the empire, in the depths of the castle’s forgotten chambers—places where light dared not reach.
Down here, in the cold, dimly lit underground, things were different. There were no gleaming crystals, no vibrant banners of the kingdom. The air was thick with tension, the kind that clung to your skin and made every breath feel heavier. It was the perfect place for the business at hoof.
Sombra stood in a hidden room carved deep beneath the castle, an ancient dungeon now repurposed for more subtle matters. Before him sat a trembling pegasus, bound to a simple wooden chair. The dim light from the single flickering torch on the wall cast deep shadows across the stone floor, giving the scene an ominous feel.
The pegasus, his wings bound tightly behind him, looked at Sombra with wide, terrified eyes. Sweat beaded on his brow, his breath shallow and erratic.
“Where did you get the magic inhibitor?” Sombra’s voice was calm, almost too calm, as he circled the chair. “And who is producing them?” His tone carried a weight of authority, yet there was no malice in it. Still, the tension in the room was suffocating.
This was one of the main "tasks" he was responsible for—personally interrogating criminals. Why? Well, his methods were highly effective. Although, truth be told, during the last week he was missing, Celestia had taken over. Why didn’t her guards handle it? Simple: the alicorn needed something to vent her frustration on. But now he was back, and he wasn’t nearly as harsh during interrogations.
The pegasus shifted nervously, his hooves scraping against the floor. He said nothing.
Sombra stopped, leaning in closer, his eyes narrowing.
“Oh crap, what do I do now? Usually, just raising my voice works, but it’s not doing the trick! Do I really have to that?” Sombra thought, getting a bit nervous while trying not to let the pegasus notice.
“You will answer me.” His voice took on a darker edge, but it was still restrained, controlled. Seriously, at this rate, his throat was going to hurt for the rest of the week. Why couldn’t they just admit their crimes and join the 'redemption program'? Though, to be honest, he wasn’t a fan of that program either, since it involved getting beaten into being good—literally.
The pegasus swallowed hard, his eyes darting around the room, looking for any means of escape that didn’t exist. He opened his mouth, but only a weak croak escaped. He was frozen in fear. There it was again—why did everypony outside the Crystal Empire get so scared when he put on his 'grumpy face'? It wasn’t his fault he was born with that expression and so many canines.
These ponies didn’t know true terror; they’d never seen Celestia after a ten-hour workday, hungry and cranky, she was like a beast. No, it was definitely not recommended to be around her in that state. He shuddered at the memory.
Sombra sighed inwardly. He didn’t want to do this, but sometimes old habits were useful. He stepped closer, his expression hardening. His eyes darkened, and his voice dropped to a menacing whisper.
“I’m not as... patient as you think. If you won’t tell me what I need to know, I’ll have to... convince you .” He let a sinister smile creep across his face.
The pegasus flinched, panic flashing in his eyes.
“I-I... I don’t know! I swear!” he stammered, his voice barely above a whisper. “It’s... it’s always someone different. A new seller every week! ¡Please…don’t hurt me…!”
Sombra leaned in even closer, his shadow falling over the pegasus. His expression twisted into a mockery of the tyrant he once was, his lips curling into a wicked grin. He chuckled darkly, his voice rising into a chilling, maniacal laugh that echoed through the chamber.
The pegasus paled, shaking violently in the chair. “I-I don’t know anything else! Please! I swear!” he cried, his voice cracking under the weight of his fear.
Sombra narrowed his eyes. He knew this pony had told him everything he could, but the act had its purpose. Before he could speak again, the door creaked open, and one of Sombra’s crystal pony servants entered the room, his hooves clicking softly against the stone floor.
“My lord,” the servant said in a calm, almost casual tone, “Would you like me to bring the hammer?”
Sombra blinked, his façade breaking for a moment as he turned to the servant with surprise. A hammer, seriously? Never. He couldn’t even handle butter knives, seriously, He had no idea what kind of image his servants had of him.
“A... a hammer?” He cleared his throat, clearly flustered. “N-No, that won’t be necessary. Seriously, are we trying to kill somepony here? I’m pretty sure he’s already told us everything he knows.”
The crystal pony tilted his head slightly, his voice steady yet cautious. "My lord, you are truly merciful, but if I may—this is the fourth one we've interrogated this week. Perhaps... more persuasive methods are required?"
Sombra took a step back, genuinely startled by the pony’s calm suggestion. He hadn’t expected that level of zeal from his servant But, no. Sombra wasn't a mosnter. He never would cross that line.
“No, that won’t be necessary,” he repeated, regaining his composure. “We’re done here.”
The servant bowed slightly.
“As you wish, my lord.” He turned and left the room, leaving Sombra alone with the pegasus.
Sombra sighed, shaking his head. He looked down at the trembling pegasus, who was still quaking in fear, his eyes wide with terror.
“I won’t hurt you,” Sombra said, his voice softening, his “bad king” act dropped entirely. “But you need to be careful about who you trust. These magic inhibitors are dangerous and can seriusly put in danger other ponys, If you know anything else, now is the time to speak.”
The pegasus shook his head, tears welling up in his eyes. “I don’t... I don’t know anything more. I swear it. I just buy it because a friend told me to”
Sombra studied him for a long moment, then nodded.
“Very well. But consider this a warning: stay away from those who deal in such things. And this doesn’t excuse buying something illegal.” He glanced at the guards by the door. “Take him to Canterlot. Another one for the redemption program.”
The pegasus looked more terrified than before. Wow, so the redemption program was scarier than him? He wasn’t sure if he should feel relieved or offended. Well, although Sombra didn’t blame him, when he had to go through that program , it was hell on Equis.
As the pegasus was led away, Sombra let out a deep sigh, leaning against the cold stone wall. This is going to get worse before it gets better , he thought to himself. But for now, he had to maintain control—of the empire, and of himself.
Sombra sat at his desk, surrounded by an imposing stack of paperwork that seemed to tower over him, casting long shadows in the dim light of his study. The Crystal Empire might have been glowing above, but in the quiet solitude of his office, the weight of responsibility pressed heavily on his shoulders. Reports on recent attacks, notes on the illegal use of magic inhibitors, security updates—all piled high in front of him. It felt endless.
He skimmed through the reports once more, furrowing his brow. Despite all the paperwork, there was no mention of the "new drug" Celestia had spoken of. Perhaps it hasn’t been produced in large quantities yet, he mused, though that did little to ease his growing headache.

Sombra exhaled deeply, grateful for the small gesture. He reached for the cup, but his hoof bumped against the towering pile of documents, sending the cup tumbling. The tea splashed across the desk, spilling over the papers he’d just signed. He clenched his jaw in frustration and muttered to himself as he reached for a cloth to clean up the mess.
"How familiar," he grumbled, his mind flashing back to a memory—Twilight. How many times had he seen her desk cluttered with books, scrolls, and letters, almost toppling under the sheer weight of her work? And how many times had he watched her knock over her tea while being so lost in her tasks? The thought tugged at the corners of his mouth, almost making him smile.

He realized how long it had been since he’d let himself think about her. The past weeks had been a blur of duties, interrogations, and attempts to keep the empire under control. It had left him no time to dwell on the events of the other world. But now, in the silence of his study, with the only sound being the distant hum of the empire’s crystal magic, he couldn’t help but wonder what she was doing.
Probably reading quietly, he thought, closing his eyes as he leaned back in his chair. He could picture it so clearly—Twilight, sitting in the warm light of her library, sipping tea from a delicate cup. Or maybe she was indulging in one of those little cakes she seemed to enjoy so much, the kind that always left a smudge of frosting on the corner of her mouth.
Sombra smirked slightly, imagining her laughter echoing through the library, perhaps joined by the chatter of her friends or the youthful enthusiasm of her dragon assistant. A peaceful life, far from the constant weight of a crown, far from the responsibilities that now bore down on him like a leaden cloak.
Or... His thoughts darkened for a moment, the image shifting in his mind. What if she was with someone else? What if she had found another stallion to share her life with? His heart raced at the thought, a sudden surge of jealousy that he hadn’t expected.
No, he shook his head quickly. She wouldn’t. He didn’t want to believe it. Twilight wasn’t the kind of pony who would simply move on like that. Or was it just that he didn’t want to picture her with anyone else? The idea unsettled him, more than it should have.
He sat up, startled by the intensity of his own thoughts. The absurdity of it gnawed at him. Why do you care, Sombra? He scolded himself. This is foolish. You have no right to claim anything from her because we were just friends He didn’t even know if they were still friends after the last fight, and now that they had lost all contact, they didn’t even say a proper goodbye.
Sombra pressed a hoof against his temple, trying to push the thoughts away. All this work is draining me, he thought bitterly. He was mentally exhausted, and it was making him weak. Too many signatures, too many decrees, organizing festivals, managing the punishments for lawbreakers—it was all so mundane. How had Cadance, the so-called "Princess of Love" from the other world, managed to keep up with it all?
Of course, Twilight had mentioned that Cadance’s husband, Shining Armor, helped her. A frown settled on Sombra’s face as he thought of that. The idea of having someone by his side to share the burden of ruling… no, it was absurd. He couldn’t see himself married, tied to anyone in that way.
But as the thought of matrimony drifted through his mind, a single image illuminated his thoughts: Twilight. Her smile, her warmth, the light in her eyes whenever she was caught up in something that excited her. He could almost see her standing beside him, her presence filling the cold, dark room with light.
Sombra shook his head violently, as if trying to rid himself of the vision. Stop it, Sombra, he muttered under his breath, his voice a harsh whisper. Let her go.
His heart pounded in his chest, the silence of the study pressing in on him once more. He stared at the spilled tea, the wet papers scattered across his desk, and sighed deeply. All this time, he had been trying to rule a kingdom and forget about her. But now, sitting here, the weight of his duties and the isolation of his role felt almost unbearable. It was times like these that the memories crept back in, unwanted, unbidden.
He leaned back in his chair once more, closing his eyes, forcing himself to focus. Twilight was in another world, living her own life. She wasn’t part of his empire, his reality. He had no right to dwell on her, no right to keep her image locked in his mind.

The Crystal Empire had so many issues—security problems, trade agreements, recent attacks—each one more pressing than the last.
He sighed deeply, leaning back in his chair as his eyes scanned another report about the illicit use of magic inhibitors. It was overwhelming. The idea of hiring a secretary flitted through his mind, someone to organize all of this chaos. But... he thought with a grimace, most of these documents are too sensitive. Celestia would kill me if I involved anypony else.
A darker thought crossed his mind—or maybe this is her way of punishing me. She didn’t believe his story about the other dimension, and now he was drowning in paperwork. Disappearing for a week wasn’t his fault, but Celestia didn’t seem to care. She hadn’t exactly been forgiving. Her skeptical look when he tried to explain still lingered in his memory.
Sombra’s head throbbed. His vision blurred slightly as the words on the page began to blend together. The weight of exhaustion pressed down on him, dragging him into a fog. His eyes fluttered shut, and before he could stop it, his head drooped down onto his desk. He fell asleep.
Suddenly, he wasn’t in his office anymore. The familiar cold stone walls were replaced by the faint glow of a memory. But this wasn’t just any dream—it was a long-buried recollection from his youth.
1000 years ago
He was a bit younger than now, a brash and defiant young pony, standing in the shadows of an old crystal castle. His eyes gleamed with a sinister light, a look of arrogance etched across his face. He was full of himself, already fascinated by the darker powers he sought to control. His plan? To embrace the corruption.
Suddenly, two figures appeared—Celestia and Luna, now mature and authoritative, though they were much older than the youthful King Sombra. Celestia’s mane was shorter and more unruly, while Luna’s eyes held a youthful mischief that hadn’t yet been overshadowed by her future responsibilities.
King Sombra was arguing passionately, his voice brimming with the fervor of his beliefs. “The Umbrum will rule the Crystal Empire! Our supremacy will be unchallenged, and I will govern as I see fit!”
The place was grim, with several crystal ponies in chains, their eyes filled with fear and despair. Celestia and Luna, looking stern and resolute, confronted him.
Celestia’s expression darkened as she listened to Sombra’s taunts. “Your arrogance is laughable,” she said, stepping forward with a cold determination. “You’ve enslaved these ponies and think you can control everything?”
Sombra scoffed, shrugging off her words. “Your petty ideals mean nothing to me. The Umbrum are destined to dominate, and I will not be restrained by your narrow-minded views.”
Celestia, without warning, stepped forward and smacked Sombra across the face with a wooden stick she had conjured from thin air. The sound of the blow echoed in the palace.
“Hey! What the—” Sombra’s eyes widened in shock as he instinctively grabbed his cheek, feeling the sting of the impact. He stared at Celestia, confused and offended, his hand still clutching the spot where she had hit him.
“You’re acting like a complete idiot,” Celestia said with a smirk, her younger voice carrying a teasing lilt. Her expression showed no sympathy as she raised an eyebrow at his indignation.
Sombra’s confusion quickly morphed into fury. “You—! You’ve got no right to—!” He started to shout, throwing curses and insults at Celestia, but before he could finish, she calmly smacked him again—this time with her hoof, right across the head. The force of the blow left him momentarily stunned.
Celestia chuckled at his expense.
“Y'know, I’ve been working on a new system of re-education,” she said with a grin. “It’s going to be a big hit. I’m calling it the Redemption Program ... and I think you’ll make the perfect test subject.”
Sombra’s face twisted in outrage. “Test subject?! That’s even worse!”
Celestia laughed as if she hadn’t heard his objection. “You’ll thank me one day.”
Just as he was about to protest further, Luna stepped foward. She was blushing faintly, and her blue eyes shimmered with sincerity as she stood close to him—too close for Sombra’s comfort.
“It’s for your own good,” she murmured softly, her voice gentle. “I want us to be friends... forever. So, best luck!”
Sombra’s heart skipped a beat. He wasn’t used to this side of Luna, the caring, almost tender side. The way she looked at him made his chest tighten, his pulse quickening. He could feel the heat rising to his face as he stared at her, completely caught off guard by the proximity. His usually sharp mind blanked, and for a moment, he didn’t know what to say. Luna’s sincerity, her closeness, it all left him feeling... vulnerable. Why was his heart pounding like this?
But before he could process the strange new sensation bubbling up inside him, Celestia’s voice interrupted, sharp and commanding.
“What are you doing with my sister?” she snapped, storming over to separate them. Celestia grabbed and pulled him away from Luna, her protective instincts flaring.
Luna stepped back, slightly flustered, her blush deepening. Sombra, still dazed from Luna’s closeness and Celestia’s intervention, barely had time to react before Celestia started dragging him away.
“Come on, we’re starting the first phase of the Redemption Program!” Celestia declared, her tone leaving no room for argument.
Sombra’s eyes widened in panic.
“Wait—what?! No! Nooooooo!” he shouted as he was pulled further away from Luna, his voice echoing through the palace.
Suddenly, the dream shattered, and Sombra jerked awake, his head snapping up from the desk. His heart was still pounding from the dream—or rather, the memory. He stared at the papers in front of him, disoriented, his mind racing.
He rubbed his eyes and sat up, trying to shake off the remnants of the dream. The images of his younger self, of Luna, and of Celestia’s teasing grin lingered in his mind. He could still feel the faint warmth on his cheek where Luna had stood too close, her words echoing in his head. Since that moment, he was able to regain the right path and was a good king for generations. Even he couldn’t believe he had lived for so long. By that time, his own powers had already corrupted his body's functions. He couldn’t even confirm if he was immortal; he was afraid that a single needle could pierce him and turn him to dust.
Sombra sighed, running a hoof through his thick, dark mane. That was so long ago , he reminded himself, though the dream had reignited something deep within him—something he hadn’t felt in years. Back then, Luna had made him feel special, like he was more than just a shadow of the past. But now... now he couldn’t stop thinking about another pony, and it was consuming his thoughts in a way he hadn’t expected.
Two days later
Sombra stared blankly at the clutter of papers on his desk, his mind struggling to process the seemingly endless bureaucracy of running the Crystal Empire. Every moment in his office felt like an eternity—signing decrees, reviewing security reports, and addressing complaints from the nobility. His mane was slightly disheveled from hours spent hunched over paperwork, and his eyes were heavy with fatigue.
As he reached for the next stack of documents, there was a knock at the door. A crystal pony servant entered, bowing politely.
"King, a letter from Princess Celestia," the servant said, offering him a scroll sealed with the familiar royal emblem.
Sombra’s eye twitched involuntarily. Celestia again? He already had more than enough to deal with. With a sigh, he took the letter, breaking the seal with his magic, already bracing for whatever condescending message she had to offer.
Unfurling the scroll, he began to read:
Dear Sombra, I hope this letter finds you up to your ears in paperwork—just the way I like to imagine you! A little birdie told me you’ve been swamped with all those administrative duties, and I must admit, the thought brought a smile to my face. But as much as I enjoy imagining you buried under piles of official documents, I’ve decided to show you some mercy. I’m sending some help. You may be familiar with her—my brilliant, most capable student, Twilight Sparkle. She’s rather... excited about visiting the Crystal Empire again, though between you and me, part of the reason I’m sending her is that I need her away from me-I mean from Canterlot for a while. She’ll be arriving soon. I trust you’ll find her assistance... helpful. Don't care If you don't. Yours sincerely, Celestia
Sombra’s heart sank as he read the letter. His magic gripped the scroll tighter, crumpling the edges slightly. Twilight Sparkle? Celestia’s prized pupil. Of all the ponies Celestia could send, why her?
His thoughts immediately drifted back to the other Twilight. The Twilight from the alternate dimension—the one he had tried so hard to forget. Being around this Twilight Sparkle would only remind him of her. And that was something he couldn’t afford right now. He was trying to move on, to push those memories aside, but now, with Twilight coming here... it would be impossible.
And it wasn’t just that. There was something about this Twilight that made him uneasy. While the Twilight from the other world had been warm and understanding, this Twilight always seemed more... clinical, more focused on her duties. Her presence would no doubt stir up memories and feelings he didn’t want to confront.
As he read further, a postscript in clumsy, crooked writing caught his eye:
P.S. Luna here! I saw your latest dream—oh, it brought back so many memories! I couldn’t stop laughing. You were so serious back then, and it’s still funny to think about. Good times! <3
Beneath Luna’s message was a crude drawing of a heart, drawn in a way that suggested she was barely trying to be serious.
Sombra stared at the heart, feeling his face heat up in embarrassment and annoyance. Of course Luna saw that dream Even when I told her to not. He grumbled under his breath, crumpling part of the letter in his hoof. The thought of her laughing at his memories of their youth only made things worse.
What is Celestia thinking? he grumbled to himself. This Twilight will only make things worse. She would ask too many questions, she’d want to "help" in ways that would only complicate everything. And worst of all, every glance at her would remind him of the Twilight he had left behind in the other dimension—the one he still hadn’t been able to forget.
With frustration bubbling inside him, Sombra quickly grabbed a fresh piece of parchment, determined to put a stop to this.
Dear Celestia, Under no circumstances should Twilight—
Before he could finish, a loud knock echoed through the room. The quill paused in midair as he turned his gaze toward the door.
Someone was outside.
